Review:This was a great conclusion to a fantastic series. I am totally satisfied with the resolution of Elizabeth, Lina, Claire, Teddy, and Snowden's stories. The ending of Diana and Henry's stories, as well as Penelope's to some extent, left me so, so disappointed. It's been two days since I finished Splendor and I can't shake the sense of melancholy that settled on me after finishing it, all due to the bittersweet ending for Diana. It didn't make me not like the series, but I think I would have liked it even more had Diana's story ended differently.Fans of romance, historical fiction, and fans of YA in general will enjoy the Luxe series. I highly recommend it!Just One Gripe:Godbersen uses several of the same phrases multiple times in Splendor. "Bee-stung lips," "a hat of magical significance," calling Central Park "verdant," these are the main offenders that spring to mind. This is a small gripe, but it was obvious enough for me to notice.The Best Thing About This Book:The poetic justice that befalls the "bad guys." I love it!

Splendor brings Anna Godbersen's Luxe series to a close, and what a tremendous ending it is! All the loose threads are tied up, but not always so neatly; the four main young women find that life doesn't always give you what you thought you wanted, but you've got to make peace with yourself no matter what. Splendor is told in alternating chapters that focus on each of the young women and takes them through the trials that will ultimately lead them to that peace, whatever it is.The book opens with Diana Holland having traveled (alone in 1900!) to Havana in search of love Henry Schoonmaker, who has joined the army in order to escape his shrew of a wife, Penelope. While the young lovers are reunited, Penelope herself starts to realize that maybe she was too hasty in marrying Henry, and sets her eye on on a Bavarian prince who is looking lustfully back at her. Meanwhile, both Elizabeth Holland and Carolina Broad have achieved contentment: Elizabeth has married her father's business partner in order to give her unborn child a name, and Carolina's past as a maid is firmly behind her as she falls in love with the handsome Leland. Of course none of this flows smoothly, and all of the young women are subjected to tragedies of varying degrees.In this final installment, Ms. Godbersen does the remarkable: she allows her characters to achieve a sense of maturity without being preachy or giving them fairy tale endings. The deceit that all of them have practiced is dealt with, but there is no moral high ground. Instead, I felt they were all so identifiable, because let's face it: pretty young women do have faults and some conquer those faults while others do not. It's all about what you are willing to live with.Ms. Godbersen filled Splendor with fashion and romance, betrayal and reconciliation, and it could not have been a more fitting ending to this series. My one problem with the storyline applies to Diana, and it is only because of her previous infatuation that I have a hard time believing she wasn't up to the task. However, I could still see her achieving something far more exciting with her life, so even though I found her decision out of character, I can let it go, and even give kudos to Ms. Godbersen for not being pat in wrapping up my favorite storyline of the four. I would actually rate Splendor 4.5 stars, but my enjoyment of the series as a whole prompts me to round up to the full five. Truly an enjoyable ride.

Her sister Diana has cut her hair and quit New York to go after her love, Henry, who was forced into an unhappy marriage with the duplicitous Penelope Hayes. But if there's anything that these ladies have learned, it's that life doesn't go the way you plan, and getting everything you wanted isn't the same thing as happily ever after.Like Godbersen's previous books, Splendor has glamour, drama, and intrigue, but really feels more like an extended conclusion than an actual story. Elizabeth seems to take a more passive role in the book, and compared to her previous escapades, her journey from learning the truth about her husband's death and her current marriage to when she actually takes control of her own life is a little anti-climatic. Readers who love to hate Penelope will be indignant at her behavior but will be happy to see her finally get what's coming to her, even if her fate isn't at all what they expected. Lina struggles with the truth, but readers will be pleased when she finally succumbs to it and reconciles with her sister. Her happy ending is also unexpected, but a good one. Diana continues to stand out in this book as an adventurous, smart, and fiercely independent young lady. She's truly a woman of a new era, unyielding when it comes to her ideals and strong when it comes to life's challenges. Splendor is a novel about growing up, suffering the consequences of your actions, figuring out the truth, and taking control of your life. If you're a vintage trailer fanatic like I am, then this book is for you. There's not a lot of text, but the amount of visual pleasures is incredible. There are loads of vintage photos, vintage ads, vintage cartoons, etc. from start to finish. From the early beginnings of travel trailers, all the way up through the magnificent beauties of the 50's and '60's, this book will make you want a trailer if you don't already have one, and will make you appreciate the beauty in your trailer if you do have one. It's an incredible journey through travel trailer history. It would take you forever and cost you a fortune to collect all the content that is included in this wonderful book's 192 pages. It's simply AWESOME!!!

In his second book on vintage trailers, Mr Americana Phil Noyes has done it again. This book took me back and beyond to immerse in places and dreams of a time that I only get to glimpse at now. Great photos from times past, neat old ads for travel trailers and related things. I would love to know the history of some of the people in the "family" photos. The "trailer badges" pages are excellent, great detail for the restoration that one might undertake some time. The section on "trailer parks" was just as I remembered them growing up in California in the 50's. Great book, well done.

This is a great book about the various types of old camper trailers that have been around for a very long time. The photos are terrific, showcasing the results of a lot of dedication and hard work by people who are enamored with these trailers. While I am an 'armchair' traveler, it really helps me get in the mood to read a book like this. Keep up the great writing!

This is by far the best book for beginners or even experienced people I've read on the subject. I'm new to the whole thing and this is the only book I've read out of about six, that shows how to fold, then shows the result of that fold for many different techniques and patterns. It shows batik being done in Indonesia by experts then provides practical instruction. It also covers something I'd never heard of tritik - using stitches instead of tieing. Very well done. I wish it could be updated to discuss new dyes and materials.

A more accurate title for today's artist might be Resists, because it covers a wide range of ways to mask or block out dye from fabric. Surprisingly contemporary for an old book.

I was looking for more hands on tie dye techniques and although this book does have some of that...it wasn't exactly what I expected. Had more info on Batik. Maybe it will come in handy some day for that.

As a home brewer who loves Belgian and Belgian-style ales, this was a must-read book. The first part of the book talks about Belgian breweries and how they create their beers. While the breweries don't share their recipes, the author is able to provide general guidance on how those recipes are created. Later, the author talks with american craft brewers known for their Belgian-style beers and how they brew them. The final sections talk about how to brew Belgian-style beers and includes recipes for various styles using ingredients available here in the USA. The book is infused with a lot of Belgian brewing history as well. I found it quite enjoyable and useful to read.

This is my favorite homebrew book! It comes in just ahead of "Homebrew: Beyond the Basics," which covers multiple styles.Everyone likes Belgian beers, and Brew Like a Monk covers everything between grain bills, style guidelines (ABV, IBU, SRM, etc), and even brewery strategies (fermentation temps, ABV results on sales, etc).This is not a manual, which are great to get as a first book because they cover a lot of basics for many styles. Brew like a monk is a very readable book with great information for homebrewers who already know the basics.

I've always been a fan of Belgian beers, but never quite understood the process that goes into making them. Since I started homebrewing, the goal was to brew my own Belgian style beer and this book is an invaluable resource in achieving that. The book covers a lot of history of Trappist monks and their brewing styles. All phases of brewing these beers are covered as well. The fermentation section of the book is one I revisit over and over and it includes a great amount of information to get that Belgian flavor profile we all love. I cant recommend this book enough.

If you are serious about beer and interested in the development of the Belgian style so you can create your own version, then this is a truly useful book for you the adventurous home-brewer. I started out with the clone recipe books (of which there are many out there) and initially bought this book to quickly increase my ability to clone a Belgian style beer that had enjoyed on a whim. Once I started reading however, my eyes were opened. The book does cover quite a bit of history but in doing so debunks a lot of myths about abbey beers and some of the notions about 1000 year old recipes. This is really more a book about brewing philosophy written with the small batch home-brewer in mind. There are very helpful and encouraging tips scattered throughout the book and any brewer with this new knowledge (and perhaps Brewsmith software-my personal favorite) you can continue the "tradition" of abbey beers even though you may not be affiliated with a monastery or even Belgium for that matter. Home-brewing is all about finding your style and using the experience of those that have come before to create something that you really want to drink.

Bought this for my husband who is a brewer. He calls it his bible and totes it around the brewery to pull from when discussing and planning beer with his coworkers. He constantly is reading it over and over and has explained that not only is there a lot of knowledge in there for brewers (new or old!), but there's a lot of really fascinating points in there that most brewers forget about. Definitely worth the purchase and a great gift for the brewer in your life!

Of all the books in my library, this book is by far the best and is hands-down the most detailed text on Trappist ales. Even if you are not a homebrewer, anyone who is even slightly interested in Trappist ales and the monastic way of life will not be disappointed. I have read this book cover to cover many times and I am always finding helpful and interesting info that propels my love for Trappist ales even further. Stan Hieronymous takes the reader inside the walls of the abbeys where these beers are made and not only presents the history and beers of each abbey but even manages to list a few ingredients for each beer. Because the monks and lay workers who work in the breweries are quite secretive regarding their recipes and ingredients, one can only imagine the effort that was put in by the author when writing this book.Above anything else, the author reminds the reader that each of these places is an abbey with a brewery and not the other way around. Despite the fact that the beers are truly amazing, Stan Hieronymous does not let the reader forget the reason for the existence of these beers (to add extra income to the abbey and serve as a form of manual labor according to the Rule of Saint Benedict). The author does a wonderful job of outlining the monastic way of life and mentality, and how this life of silence and harmony manages to produce some of the finest beers in the world time and time again.In addition to the famous Trappist Ales, Stan Hieronymous also provides extensive information on other commercial examples that are produced both in Belgium and the United States. While the main focus of this book is about the Trappist ales produced in the six specific Cistercian monestaries, the reader can also find detailed information about Abbey ales as well as beers brewed in the United States that follow the Belgian tradition and style.Homebrewers will not be disappointed. I found this book in the library at the end of 5th grade and read the first few chapters, the school year ended and I never finished because I switched schools. I spent 5 years looking for it and found it last year. It’s a marvelous work of literary fiction.

I really like this book, however I was forced to buy another copy after my previous one went missing. Since this book is getting on in years I was expecting a bit of wear and tear, but I could feel the fragility in the book. Its not coming apart at the seams, but neither is it perfect, which wasn't in my expectation. All in all a solid product.

I had the entire Dragonlance series when i was younger and eagerly read all of them in a few short months. I recently got a Kindle and was surprised to find the books on Amazon! :DI'm kind of disappointed though, as I can't find the second and third volumes for this particular series (The New Adventures):{

After searching several hours for just an average fantasy book to steal my interest away from the Ranger's Apprentice series, I finally found this book. When I first looked at the cover I thought it was going to be just another lame book with another lame author trying to become the next J.R.R. Tolkien. But then I opened the book and began to read...The book starts out with a teen-aged girl waking up in the middle of a forest remembering nothing but her name, Nearra. Around her are three goblins trying to decide what her fate should be. Though Nearra is afraid she realizes she must calm herself and get away. So Nearra patiently waits for the perfect time to run and as soon as the goblins get into an in depth fight over her untimely end, she runs, grabbing a dead branch for protection along the way.When the goblins catch up to her, they look around in fear before running themselves. Nearra has a moments time to catch her breath before the powerful dragonfear sweeps over her. She turns around to face this new threat and finds herself face to face with a green dragon, Slean.Her arms and hands begin to tingle but she fights the fear down. Suddenly, the dragon falls over asleep and the pain in her arms subsides. Nearra hears a voice call out to her and she turns around yet again to meet this next turn of events. Here she is introduced to a ranger, Davyn, and a Wizard, Maddoc.This begins the unlikely journey that Nearra knows she must take if ever she wishes to regain her past. Along the way Nearra makes new acquaintances including a wanna-be-wizard kender, a warrior trainee, a mix-breed elf, and a very upset minotaur, all of which swear to help her regain what she has lost at any cost... Until one commits the ultimate betrayel.This book will entice you into reading it from the moment you open it. You should probably wait until you have a good chunk of time (three to four hours) before reading it though, because once you start, you will be unable to stop.

Nearra awakens in a forest to discover that she has lost her memories. In moments, she is attacked by goblins and then a green dragon, all intent on hurting her. She manages to escape with the help of others, and assembles a band of curious companions who wish to help her answer several questions, the most important of which is: will she ever get her memories back?Add these ingredients: a great cast of characters, a sizeable helping of high adventure, an equal sized helping of fun, a smackeral of romance and a pinch of humor in the right places. What you get is this book, a fine example of quest fiction for most ages (10 and up, the back cover says).

I was debating repeating The Artist's Way (which I worked through more than a decade ago), when this new book crossed my path. Excited by the synchronicity and hopeful that the author would have new exercises and insights to offer, I snapped it up and began. Four weeks in, I'm not so sure that I shouldn't return to my original plan. Although "midlife" is prominent on the cover, that theme is absent in the book so far. The examples are all retirement and end-of-life, which feels a bit eery and depressing for someone with a career that actually continues into the future. So far the exercises seem predominantly repetitions - morning pages, artist dates and walking, plus memoirs- effective but nothing new. Methinks the publishers wished to expand the demand beyond the author's clearly-intended senior audience and tagged on a misleading subtitle for extra sales. After 8 weeks, I'm putting it on the shelf to await my future retirement.

This is a 12-week course in cultivating your creativity to create a more inspired and authentic life which reflects what is meaningful and joyful for you. Although I've read many of Julia Cameron's books, including her Artists Way and sequels, this book hits just right for midlife or retirement and is a refresher course with new wisdom and perspective.You can spend a week on each chapter doing the exercises, and it will ignite new thought. When I first read about this book, I just knew that I had to read it. I am 51 years (old/young), became disabled, and now feel retired (or put out to pasture more or less). Then, to my amazement, the description of this book smacked me in the face and gave me the inspiration to read it. Now, I feel elated! There is so much to think about and do; starting small or slow for those of us who are scared to try something new.Julia Cameron and Emma Lively have a very valuable goldmine here if people who are in need of beginning again, who may feel timid or don't know how to start, can read this. I truly mean that I am elated! They have topics to write about, things to consider and things to think about. They are called"Basic Tools For Creativity Recovery", but I call them "Jumpstarting Your True Self". There are "Taboo Subjects For The Newly Retired". Among oters that are addressed are: boredom, irritability, excitement, and even depression.All of these are addressed to make your life ahead truly authentic and new. I did some of the exciting homework, like walking 20 minutes and letting your mind wander, journaling first thing in the morning, and answering questions about certain periods in your life. They are absolutely incredible. You should do this for twelve weeks straight. I just began for this review. It changes your life in ways you won't even know at first. This book truly is one for the recently retired, who need to find the life that they want to live next. So again truly remarkable WELL written. Thank You for your wonderfully story Was so very shocked about so many mothers who abuse and the killing of their own children. You don,t really hear about it. I myself went through severe depression after the birth of my first child but never abuse my but I also had the help of my mother. I did not have the support of my husband which were longer married support from the men is also very critical and when there is not ugly stuff happens I am so very proud to be the mother of two successfully adults that I raised on my own one services at the Pentagon and the other an engineer with no drugs or drinking problems. Great read , but some woman should have never had children, my heart goes out the the children and the families, do not understand how you could hurt your own children, sad sad sad and omg the women who tortured their babies, I hope they see bad stuff in prison, !!!!!!

I cringe at some of the horrific acts carried out at the hands of mothers. This series had been able to find so many stories that seem to have been forgotten or went under the radar because of some other breaking news story. These lives deserve to be remembered.

I like the book it has a lot of different stories in it. well worth the money it cost.

The authors did some good research into some extremely sad cases. My hope in reading such stories, is that we all do a better of looking out for each other, and that we find ways to intervene before such tragedies occur.

The book had spelling and grammatical errors that was annoying. The thing that noticed is child killer stories are repeat from previous book. Otherwise it was a worthy read.

Good read.

This is actually one of the best books that I’ve ever read. Heartbreaking and shocking at times and in turn touching and heartfelt. I couldn’t put it down. I hated to read the last page. To find a new book to read now may prove difficult. I cant say enough that you should read this book. It will stay with you for a long time. Amazing.

Mixing fact and fiction into one of the best historical novels,I have ever read,Mandy creates a believable scenario where Hitler's mistress gives birth to his child. The German Midwife was a prisoner of war,residing in a concentration camp when she was handpicked to help with the pregnancy and delivery of Eva Braun's baby. Mandy does a wonderful job making Eva a "likeable" character when the world only knows her as another evil sidekick of Hitler.. we see her as a soon to be mom doing her best for the child. The outcome at birth, was not what I expected, and grabbed me by surprise. All in all, characters and plot are totally believable and I am sad this book has come to conclusion. Hope to read more by this writer...

In a room somewhere in Germany a child is born with the midwife helping. It might be in a hospital, a ghetto, a concentration camp or a castle. The only concern of the midwife is the health of the mother and the child. Thus life happens or not depending on the circumstances, in wartime or not. Very interesting book.

This book captures love, trust, suffering and pain. It tells of childbirth in awful conditions, both by the poor and the rich, with such accuracy that you can actually feel the contractions and the indescribable love a mother feels for a newborn. With fear and loathing toward the unjustly actions taken against the innocents and collateral damage humans that come during times of war, I strongly encourage you to open your mind and heart and read this book.

A very interesting read, of what might have been. Could not put this book down! Looking forward to reading more from this author!

I completed this book in about a week’s time which is slightly longer than my norm. It took but a few chapters to really grasp my attention but midway through drug on a bit. Nearing the end, it picked up again and the end (epilogue) really tied it altogether.

This book is both beautiful and horrifying at the same time. I picked it to read because my amazing little sister is a midwife. I will recommend it to her because the beauty overwhelms the horror. I loved it, and found it very difficult to put down. I will admit I shed some tears now and again.

An actual good story. No formula-matic, same ole same ole this book. Fresh, totally new concept within an enjoyable read.Dear Author: Well done you!
