First off, and this isn't important to the content of the book, but the author's writing style was extremely irritating. Over and over again he would repeat the same thought in three different ways. "God arises to defend the weak from the tyranny of the strong. He protects the vulnerable from those who would exploit them. God Vindicates the poor from the hand of the oppressor." This occurs so often that it made the book extremely frustrating to read. It got to the point where I knew that the next two sentences would just be repeats or minor variations of the first, but felt like I had to read them anyway, just in case.Far more importantly, is that the author completely misses on his interpretation of "God's Holy Wars". He first tries to differentiate between what he believes most people think of when they are talking about a Holy war compared to what God's Holy wars actually are. For starters, I don't know anyone who thinks of God's Holy wars in the strawman way that the author describes, so dismantling that argument over several chapters is pretty much pointless in addressing the actual issue. The real problem is that this re-defining of what "God's Holy war" is changes it from addressing the "Skeleton in God's closet" to the "Skeleton in Israel's closet", and therefore completely misses the point. Most reasonable people understand that a group of people doing something in the name of God is not the same as God commanding them to do it. So explaining how it wasn't the nation of Israel who decided to attack the land of Canaan, but God telling them to do so, does absolutely nothing to vindicate God and address this "skeleton".He also tries to state that the only people who are killed by the Israelites are military people living in military towns and that anything beyond that was "victory rhetoric". The problem with this is that there are plenty of verses that indicate otherwise, the first that comes to mind is Deuteronomy 21:10-14. It's not a perfect example, but definitely illustrates that all the people of those nations were affected, not just the military men. To state otherwise is willful ignorance. But if your goal is only to attack the strawman you created, that might be the point. There's a lot in this book that I was indifferent to that others may find value in reading. I disagree with a lot of his arguments and scriptural interpretations, but I ultimately agree with the goal the author sought. But I can't recommend this book with 1 of the 3 main sections being so grossly misleading and therefore leaving such a big "skeleton" completely unaddressed.

Do you have questions about Hell, Divine Judgment and the Holy Wars in the Old Testament? How do you reconcile the God of love with the God of wrath? What about all the evil in the world and the suffering of the innocent? These and other questions that you may have about the hard passages in the Bible are comprehensively explored with great wisdom by Joshua Ryan Butler in THE SKELETONS IN GOD’S CLOSET.This is the best book I have read this year. It is an interesting and compelling read. He writes beautifully with an eye for analogies and imagery. His book is not a defense of literalism but a sensitive reading of the metaphors the biblical writers have used to describe God’s purposes. He believes in the verbal inspiration and authority of the Bible, and does not apologize for any of the biblical material. He does deal with the popular caricatures of biblical teaching. Here is what he has to say in his answer to the question why he thinks the caricatures have become so popular.“I’ve come to believe there’s a part of us that wants the caricatures to be true. If the caricatures are true, it gives us a reason to write God off: to believe we’re the good guys and he’s the one with issues. We want our independence, so I think there’s a part of us that uses the caricatures to feel justified in our desire for distance, autonomy, and independence from God. So that we can feel justified in our sin.At the end of the day, we are really the ones – not God – who have constructed the caricatures and given them their validity. But God is good. Better-than-we-can-ask-or-imagine-good. Way better than the caricatures we’ve created. So I think at some level our caricatures are not just something oppressive we need to be freed from, but something constructed we need to repent of, an idol we’ve made that we need to remove our clutching grasp from – in order to receive the redemptive embrace of the God who is gloriously good.”Butler’s central message and driving theme of his book is that God is good all the time. He seeks to demonstrate that God’s goodness is not contradictory to the topics of hell, judgment and holy war. God is not a sadistic monster who allows people to be tortured by flames for eternity or only lets religious folks into his kingdom or commands the Israelites to kill innocent children in holy war. He defeats the argument that Christians often seem to be given two options: capitulate your faith in the Bible and swoop everyone up in a universal “love is God” type of pop-theology, or bang your Bible on the pulpit and preach about “those people” out there on the other side of the church doors who are on a highway headed to hell. He relates to the pressing issues social issues of today that require us to face up to the suffering of the world. This is a book I want to give to everyone to read.

Even attempting to speak about the kinds of topics addressed in this book (Hell, Judgment, and OT Holy War) takes tremendous courage and care. And Joshua Ryan Butler has both. But he does something far deeper here: he takes his readers into the very heart of who God is, highlighting his goodness, mercy, and love. Our world fell into darkness when the serpent first questioned the goodness of God in the garden. Today, God's goodness is still being questioned. But when Hebrews tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (13:8), that means we need to see God's goodness and mercy underneath even the most seemingly difficult-to-swallow truths. Joshua deals with all of them, and many others that aren't evidently connected. One of the best sections is in Part 2 where he addresses the reconciliation of God as judgment on other religions. He handles this matter with tremendous care, and yet highlights the glories of the good news in a way that is rarely heard today. You need to read this book. You need to wrestle through these issues. The Skeletons in God's Closet will challenge you, convict you, show you yourself in ways you haven't seen before, and offer solid answers in the face of caricatures regarding who God is and what he is like. If the church today could respond to the issues presented in this book the way Joshua does, we would see kingdom activity reminiscent of the book of Acts.

Okay, the book is fun to read to begin with (biting wit of Anthony Bourdain). Triust me, go beyond the wit and conversation piece of the book - actually dig into the recipes. He's right, you can find those same recipes elsewhere, he is only giving you (in an often paired down quantity to suite the home kitchen) the way they cook it at Les Halles. The thing is, they obviously do it well at Les Halles. I've made some of the same dishes from other French cookbooks but never achieved the same results.Absolute stand outs (and for me more than worth the cost of the book right there) that I have already prepared several times from this book:*coq au vin*beef bourguignon*chocolate mousseOne of the things he does well is demystify cooking. You break down a complex recipe into step by step and before you know it you have a meal that you can actually taste the layers and see how the flavors fit together without blending into one (ala slow cooker) taste.

This is A GREAT bistro cookbook, and a true ode to Mr. Bourdain's great breakthrough patron. To me - and I say this with sincere humility - Bourdain is one of the great enigmas in my life experience. He is a source of admiration: his Einstein-like genius in the kitchen (geniuses are able to see the obvious that the rest of us can't); his ability to balance near-caustic sarcasm with side-splitting humor; his capacity for letting his internal light shine through the darkness that clouded much of his past; his example that no matter how much you may have fu€ked-up beforehand, you can still triumph if you follow your passion and don't quit. On the other hand, he can be a sanctimonious bastard, a despicable "limousine liberal," and a shameless sycophant. And perhaps worst of all, he makes me SO jealous of his Thoreau-like capacity for sucking the marrow (literally as well as figuratively) out of life, CURSE YOU, ANTHONY BOURDAIN! And thank you sincerely and deeply for sharing your truly excellent works with us all!

A. Bourdain gives advise about how to become a really good cook. The one thing he emphasized that really helped me is using the technique called "mise in place". It really does work. I've been cooking for about 50 years and I have only started using "mise in place" for the last 4 years. Without going into what Bourdain means and how, as a home cook, I interpret applying "mise in place" is very similar. For example:Read and understand the recipe. Make sure that you have all the ingredients and equipment. Understand the timing of what and when you need to do to complete each task.If you have a complicated recipe make sure you can do it in stages and, do each one. The more I consciously use the technique the better the outcome and the quicker I can complete the recipe.Bourdain's cookbook has lots of recipes and helpful advice on how to complete them.

This is the cookbook to buy if you are able to spend an entire Sunday afternoon making three kinds of stock, and have enough space in your fridge to store it for the week. All of the instruction is no-nonsense, and accommodates the home kitchen -- you can probably prepare most if not all of the recipes with a single knife, and Bourdain encourages you to do so. The total lack of pretentiousness, especially regarding equipment, is fantastic. I'd say "Les Halles" rivals Paul Prudhomme's "Louisiana Kitchen" in its emphasis on the love of good food over fancy technique.Every recipe is delicious. Like, "you cant even have to say it's delicious, because you ate too much of it to even speak" delicious. And as much as Bourdain loves pork, the real treat here is the fish, and the pie dough recipe alone is worth the price. The accompanying photography is suberb, as is the typesetting and layout. Real care went into making this. And it's plain just a beautiful book. Under the dust jacket, embossed in gold on the maroon cover, there's a skull with a chef's hat clutching a dripping knife in its teeth. So if nothing else, this will be hands down the coolest cookbook on your shelf.

Thought I knew how to cook, thank you Mr. Bourdain for a showing me how much I have to learn. Luv the book.

I've bought several copies of this book. I am a professional cook, but it is not something I want to do for the rest of my life, although it has treated me well while I go to school, army bct, etc. However, when I encounter younger new cooks full of dreams and doubts, if I like them well enough, I'll let them have a copy of this book, as it is a great source of inspiration to either pursue the life of the chef or get really good at something else.

This is one of the few cook books that both (a) I've read cover-to-cover, *and* (b) I recommend to anyone who will listen. I am particularly fond of the "it's not hard" and "it doesn't have to be expensive or finicky" attitude -- it's very encouraging and enthusiastic. In fact, having read (and cooked a bunch from) both this book and Charcuterie, I now get *angry* when a mid-tier or better restaurant serves me clearly-store-bought stuff -- it's just not that hard! It's a great book, and an entertaining read. The only downside is that it has too many... forced? artificial-feeling? "Bourdain"-ness moments, added in in a jarring way. It probably helps sell the book, but I thought it felt unnecessary and hacky too often -- and this is coming from someone who -likes- his shows and public persona! There were just too many times I thought, "I'd bet $100 some editor poked him to stick that phrase in there, or added it himself" that were jarring as I read it. And I'm a -fan- of direct, adult language and side rants! It felt like it needed another round of editing, or simply a bit more effort; sorry, had to ding a star.Still, if you're interested in French cooking, or don't actually read the narratives of cookbooks and are looking for technique and recipes, it's a great resource. Now go make some stock from scratch! : )

Inspiring for those of us who deal with herion addicts that are dropping like flies. It's heartbreaking to grieve the younger generation, especially when rich parents stuff their kid's pockets with money and they overdose.

Gosh, can I just start out by saying, I want a cat just like Bob.James has hard a rough life, and he turned to drugs to help cope. Living his life as a street musician. Coming home one night he spots a roughed up cat on a neighbors mat. Thinking nothing of it, really, he goes into his apartment for the night. Only the cat is there the next night, and the next.James takes the cat around to the neighbors looking for the owner, but finds none. So James take the cat home, feeds him, and cleans a wound he notices the cat has. James takes him to a vet and gets medication that the cat has to take for a few days so the cat gets to stay. Then the cat gets a name, Bob.James doesn't want to get attached thinking that Bob will want to return to the streets, only Bob doesn't seem to want to. Then Bob starts joining him at work. A few things happen, I don't want to spoil anything, and James realizes that he and Bob are in this together, he is responsible for another life, and he starts to turn his life around. This is a beautiful true story of a man, and a cat, getting there second chances in life. And James realizes he needs Bob as much as Bob needs him. They are comfort, friends, soul mates, and this us there story.

Don't recall where I saw the book cover early this morning, but I fell in love with Bob's picture and bought the Kindle edition. Downloaded it, got sucked in reading the first few pages and didn't put it down until I'd finished reading it a few hours later.I laughed out loud and had tears running down my cheeks as I read their very touching and heart-warming story ... and I hated that the book had to end. Thanks for sharing your stories with us, James and Bob!All the best.halTwoBigCats

What a beautiful and articulate story about the goodness that lives in every person and the power of connection to a sentient being that can lift even the most desolate out of the ashes...the fact that it was about a cat was cool too...

A friend recommended the book, A Street Cat Named Bob: And How He Saved My Life by James Bowen. This true story was a combination of sad, hopeful, heart-warming and inspiring. I also watched the movie, which followed pretty closely to the book. It was truly an entertaining book.James Bowen suffered from a variety of maladies and had been diagnosed with such things as ADHD and Schizophrenia. He also went through a struggle with drug addiction and homelessness. Trying to turn things around, he was undergoing addiction treatment and living in sheltered-accommodations. Bowen supports himself on London streets by busking, or singing and playing his guitar for donations. He doesn’t realize how much his life will change when an orange, needy, street cat appears near his apartment. The cat is in need of medical attention and Bowen takes the cat to the veterinarian—even though he barely has enough money for himself. Soon it is evident that the cat is here to stay and Bowen names him Bob. Bob starts following Bowen when he goes to “work,” and he realizes that Bob is actually an asset on the street. “Seeing me with my cat softened me in their eyes. It humanized me. Especially after I’d been so dehumanized. In some ways it was giving me back my identity. I had been a non-person; I was becoming a person again.” People also became more generous with donations. Some regulars even brought Bob presents including treats, toys and even hand-made scarves.Having Bob also made Bowen focus on someone other than himself. “Bob was my baby and making sure he was warm, well fed and safe was really rewarding. It was scary too.” It also brought other changes in Bowen. “Thanks to him I’d rediscovered the good side of human nature. I had begun to place my trust—and my faith—in people again.A Street Cat Named Bob is a true success story, but you will have to read the book to find out the ending. I suggest watching the movie as Bob plays himself, and he really is a talented and personable cat—even if you are not a cat lover.

Loving animals I very rarely like to read novels based on them. This time traveling far away from home I saw the book with a catchy picture of Bob traveling on the shoulders of his best friend and I was hooked. Ordered the book that would take longer that I had hoped for and realizing I wanted to read it fast before my next travel took advantage of a great dis count given for the same book in e-format. I finished it too fast and when the book arrives will give it to my friend a dog lover that is the Mother Theresa of dogs, she will love it too and will be amused to get into the soul of Bob a very spirited cat.The book is a tale of redemption for a young fellow who is struggling with his life and keeping his modest flat. He is suddenly gifted with the friendship of a vulnerable stray cat. In helping the wounds of the stray he opens doors that lead him to his own salvation regaining his self of purpose and direction. The authors ability to make us become three musketeers in the story is a pleasure. I learned from the author how painful and scary is to recover from drug addiction and how seemingly easy drugs offer a quick solution to emotional pain and loneliness. The love of Bob teaches us how love and care needs no quick fixes that lead to a dangerous downfall. A great Christmas book with adventure and a magic message.

Charles Bukowski's intrepid hero / alter ego Hank Chinaski is back in this funny satire of Tinsel Town in the late 1980s.Culled from his experience writing the screenplay for the film Barfly, Bukowski’s Hollywood rips into the shallowness of show business. The plot twists are so absurd, the characters so vapid and vain, they must be based on real life.Bukowski’s cynical take on movie audiences (“People became so used to seeing s*** on film that they no longer realized it was s***,”) versus novel/poetry readers is insightful (“Almost anything upsets or insults a movie audience, while people who read novels and short stories love to be upset and insulted.”)The best bits of Hollywood happen when Bukowski looks at the role of the writer in the film business.“Who ever photographed the writer? Who applauded? … It was damn sure just as well: the writer was where he belonged: in some dark corner, watching.”Bukowski’s portrayal of Barfly leads Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway as characters Jack Bledsoe and Francine Bower is particularly interesting, especially since he’s depicting a fresh-faced Rourke, when the rollercoaster of Rourke’s career was cresting the top its first hill.Like the town it is named after, Bukowski's Hollywood is fun, funny, droll, and pathetic. There’s a lot of wine drinking, and the love affair between Hank and Sarah — the only two “normal” characters in the novel — is sincere and sweet.Hollywood doesn’t pack the emotional wallop of Ham on Rye, or the laughs of Post Office, but it is still vintage Bukowski, and you can’t go wrong with that. As Hank Chianski notes:"Maybe writing was a form of bitching. Some just bitched better than others.”Bitch on, Bukowski, you beautiful bastard!-30-

Unlike Charles Bukowski's previous novels, 'Hollywood' tells the story of Henry Chinaski's life as a successful writer. He also happens to have a supportive and understanding wife as well. In this novel, you hardly see any character that is either a complete train-wreck or extremely down on their luck. However, as a person who's been following Chinaski's life chronologically (Ham on Rye->Factotum->Post Office->Women), I got a weird satisfaction from reading this novel by just knowing that Chinaski finally made it after all those years of struggles. Of course, Hollywood is still a Bukowski novel, not a Cinderella story. There are a plenty of booze and ironies in this novel. They just taste sweeter than the previous ones.

This is alright, and if you love Bukowski then you should read it, but definitely no where near my favorite. It actually seemed to give Bukowski a clean different look about him... I felt like he became a boring old man trying to keep up with his old dirty image. Sad, but it was sad to realize while reading this. Anyway, read this before watching the movie "Barfly", and if you read this then you must watch that movie... and if you watched the movie already and haven't read this, then read this to understand how horrible the movie was to even Bukowski and why it turned out so bad. It's also great to look up the other actors and directors that at one point wanted to be a part of that movie... it would have been way better of a film and this novel would have been better too if they let another director and actors do it.

Before I discuss the book, a word about Bukowski. Bukowski has a way of making it seem that a life of sin is good for your soul and that people who live virtuous lives are dull people with dead souls. I am rather skeptical of this philosophy, but every time I read about his adventures with booze and women I tend to feel that I am missing something in life. Bukowski represents the realization of the fantasy most men have of saying f you to the system and the routine and getting away with it. This book is a memoir of the making of the movie Barfly, which he wrote the screenplay for and which is based on his early life. Bukowski has a well known contempt for Hollywood types, whom he considers phonies, hacks, hustlers, and hucksters, and his rendering of his immersion in this world is funny and memorable. And by the way, I have seen the movie: the book is better.

I bought 12 books on Bukowski. I like this one because he wrote BARFLY and FACTOTUM both made into movies. Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway in BARFLY and Matt Dillon in FACTOTUM. In his writings he uses the name Henry Chinaski. Rourke goes into a bar in Los Angeles on 3rd Street named the Kenmore Lounge. One of my favorite watering holes. And in the introduction to the movie, it shows various Hollywood Boulevard bars that no longer exist. All operating it the late 50's and 60's. The last remaining one (The Powerhouse) on Highland, is now closed and revamping into an expensive bar. Too bad too. Well, the FROLIC Bar next to the Pantages Theater is still there and shown in numerous films too. All gone, but not forgotten by us old timers. Aldo Ray's hangout too, as well as Charles Bukowski. Better discover him before it is too late.

I saw Barfly in 1987 when I was a kid and didn't get it. After reading Hollywood almost 20 years later I now understand. It's not Bukowskis master piece but it ranks top 5 and really sheds light more on his own opinions of himself. There's way more self reflection here. He's brutally honest as always but this is way more of a sad goodbye story. It's reads more like him reminiscing of times past and therefore now lost to him. You should watch Barfly immediately after.

This one is as good as his others - just as insightful, just as poignant, and just as often hilarious.

This is only a lightly-toasted Bukowski. Quick, light, fun read. If you missed the last season of Californication you can basically find it here. If this is your first Buk novel, read on because there is so much more to be had and the bulk of his work is grimier and even more fun. I really liked his character in this book because you find you can get close to the lion. A sloppy toast to the writers of the world... Can easily be read in an afternoon.
