This book in a nutshell: Wake up early and use that morning time to do something that enriches your life. The magic of this advice comes not in the words of the book, but in the dispositional change it suggests. The book's central thesis: you have the power to change your life. What this book is doing, in a succinct and marvelous way, is intimating a reference group that you can be a part of if you desire. Movers, shakers, successful people-- all of them, the book claims, use the morning hours to advance something important to them. There are a lot of concrete suggestions in this small ebook for managing your new routine, but it all comes down to making those morning rituals a habit. However, WHAT THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DO BEFORE BREAKFAST is not only for morning people. Vanderkam talks a lot about getting up early, but truly, it’s not about when you rise, but how you prioritize your day. It’s about using those first hours productively, whether they come before dawn or not. This is the dispositional change that can truly impact your life. It's a great message, and a great read. Had a cup of coffee and a biscotti and finished the book before I knew it!

I enjoyed reading this book but be aware of what you're buying. It's very short and probably a bit overpriced for the length. It doesn't provide any real insights either - the entire book can really be reduced to: get up early and use that time to work on things that you consider meaningful ('important but not urgent' tasks).

In this slim, but practical ebook, time management author and trainer Laura Vanderkam has put together some gems on how to get the most out of mornings and, as a consequence, the rest of your day.Mornings hold the key to taking control of our schedules, full stop. Drawing on anecdotes from some well-known American executives and solid scientific research Venderkam provides a compelling case for altering the way we start our day.Studies show that most Americans, across age groups, get up at about 6 a.m. The time between waking and starting work is spent herding children towards the door for school, tidying up, personal grooming, commuting and so on.From a study of the time logs and profiles of high-achieving people Vanderkam reports that former CEO of Pepsico, Steve Reinemund is up at 5 a.m., goes for a 4-mile run, prays and eats breakfast with his family before going to run a Fortune 500 Company. James Citrin, head of Spencer Stuart is also exercising at 6:00 and then spends time in quiet time to consider the day ahead. Citrin did a survey of the morning rituals of executives he admired to find that the latest any of them was up regularly was 6 a.m. Successful people have their priorities clear and early mornings are the time when they have most control over their schedules. But that is probably true for all of us.We can divide the world up into “night people” and “morning people.” Both groups have only 168 hours each week, but not all hours are equally suited to all things. The common reason for not rising early cited by “night people” is that they do their best work then. There is little scientific evidence that this is true.Professor Roy Baumeister has spent his career studying self-discipline (I reviewed his book in this paper earlier this year,) and has found a direct correlation between fatigue and self-discipline. “Diets are broken in the evening, not the morning. The majority of impulsive crimes are committed after 11:00 p.m. Lapses in drug use, alcohol abuse, sexual misbehaviour… tend to come about late in the day.”In the early hours of the day we have enough will-power and energy to tackle things that require internal motivation, and that are rarely rewarded immediately. Baumeister also proved that once something is a routine or habit, it requires very little self-discipline to continue. Applied to the argument of this book, people who turn high value tasks into morning rituals conserve their energy for later battles. What are the best morning habits? Vanderkam’s research showed that successful people use their mornings for nurturing their careers, nurturing their relationships, and nurturing themselves.Nurturing your career can take the form of doing focused work, reading in your field, and thinking strategically about your projects or company, or planning the day. One executive is quoted as saying: Every day I have a job; in the morning I think I have a career. To “nurture relationships” Vandekam advised one single mother to get to bed early so she can use her early mornings for Mommy-and-me time with her daughter before beginning her commute to work. What a beautiful way to start a day, giving your child your best, not what is left over of you at the end of the day. Much is made of the value of families having dinner together for the stability and moral growth of children. This surely true of pleasant breakfasts, too.Statistics indicate that dual income couples can find only 12 minutes a day to talk to each other. Early mornings might go some way to address this relationship issue. And then there is “nurturing yourself.” Most of the executives the author quotes use part of their early starts to exercise or do yoga – examples are Xerox’s Ursula Burns, Coors’ van Paasschen, Rodale’s Steve Murphy among others. These are incredibly busy people and they choose the mornings for their exercise routines possibly without knowing how beneficial exercise at this time of day really is. Stress hormones released on waking are counteracted by exercise, as is the blood glucose effects of high-fat diets, and so much more. People exercising in the morning are also more likely to stick to this routine with the heightened ability to apply self-discipline at this time.Spiritual practices – praying, studying scripture or meditating were also found to be popular. The inability to get to bed early enough to allow for an early rise because of the many chores that have to be done before going to bed, doesn’t hold up according to Vanderkam. In the same way that dieticians tell dieters to keep a food log, Vanderkam suggests that to know how you spend your time is best seen from actually tracking it. This involves jotting down what you are doing as you are doing it so you can reflect on exactly how you spend your time. It will become evident that much of the night time activity is unnecessary and of a far lower priority than what can be gained by the early start. This is a practical guide that addresses many of the logistic and other complications that prevent one seizing the golden hours of the day. It will inspire you to rethink your morning routine and you will be so much better off for doing so.Readability Light +---- SeriousInsights High --+-- LowPractical High +---- Low Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy

I love to read, but I'm also a "cut to the chase" kind of gal. As others have noted - some kindly, some not-so-kindly - this is a short book, but that also meant that on the first day of the new year, I was able to read it in an afternoon and then spend time thinking about how I could implement the ideas into my routines. If you're looking for a hand-holding book - this is not it. If you're looking for basic ideas, inspiring stories from real people, and a kick in the pants, then you've come to the right place. Vanderkam shares from her personal experiences, as well as from those that she has interviewed. Whether you need some help getting motivated to make the most of your weekends, get up before 7 am, or get back on the treadmill (that's my personal one), I think you'll find what you need in this paperback.Although I had read a couple of the e-books included in this paperback, it was a really good reminder to read them again, and perfect for the start of a new year.** Word of Warning: If you buy the Kindle version of this book, you will ONLY receive the Breakfast book, so to get the full set (breakfast, weekend, and work), you will need to buy the paperback version. However, I believe it is worth the money, and will become one of those books you will want to re-read at the start of each new year.

I think I misunderstood what this book was going to do for me. I was expecting ideas and tips and what I got was almost an autobiography. I learned more about the author and her family than I did about reversing my late night/late morning habits. It was well written and I have no real complaints other than the title being misleading. It wasn't a guide at all. It was humorous but not very instructive. Also it led me to inadvertent irony in action - I stayed up late reading this book and ended up oversleeping the next day.

The guide book is small in size and can easily fit into a backpack, back jersey pocket, or pannier for a bike trip. There is a nice variety of rides (short to long, easy to hard) and since I live in the area, I will find this very useful. While I knew that DC is bike-friendly, seeing the maps for the routes and the tips are extremely helpful to planning a safe trip.

As a new resident of Washington D.C., this book, "Short Bike Rides: Washington D.C.," has become for my family an invaluable introduction of the area's numerous bike trails and routes. Each route is introduced with a short synopsis of its main attractions and challenges, followed by precise yet easy to follow directions. The book was obviously well researched.

This book is fascinating to say the least! When I first got it I spent an hour flipping though looking at pictures and reading the captions. When I finally got around to reading the 'book part' it was even more intriguing. Some might be unnerved by the pictures of the mummies, and its hard not to be with some of them (pg 66 for example ;) But I was glad to finally see what alot of other books only describe. This book is an excellent buy for the price. Great for those with an interest in Egyptian traditions/history and in mummies in general. Strong stomach recommended ;)

I looked for a book on mummies after seeing the excellent television documentary hosted by Egyptologist Dr. Bob Brier. I saw this book and was a little skeptical. The title "Mummies, Myth, and Magic" sounded like a book that may sacrifice scholarship for a more mainstream account to appeal to those wanting to read about mummy curses, etc. I could not resist the fascinating photos in this book, so I bought it despite my reluctance over the title. I soon realized I was wrong to be the least bit skeptical. It is a very scholarly account by an obvious expert in the field. Christine El Mahdy details how mummies were buried during different periods; the mummification techniques; how Egyptians bargained with, communicated with, and regarded their various gods; animal cults, etc. A short section on the "curse" of the tombs is included at the end and is expertly written: "...the dead positively welcomed the living. Their immortality depended on the survival of their name..." (174). The author assumes nothing in her analysis and gives a clear, erudite account of every subject examined. She offers an excellent description of what it was like for a robber or collector like Giovanni Belzoni to enter a tomb. She also explains what information can be gathered from mummies; from age and health to the duties Egyptians had under certain titles. The illustrations in this book make it a must for the serious Egyptologist to the casual enthusiast. Symbolism and the design of sample tombs are clearly diagrammed. The photos and x-rays of mummies are fascinating. There is a disturbing photo of an unknown mummy that some witnesses to its discovery believe was buried alive that will stick with you long after you put down this book. In addition, a chronology of the different dynasties is included at the beginning of this book which is essential for readers like me who have a very limited background on Egyptian history. What impressed me most of all was the deep respect the author demonstrated towards this subject: "Few of the living were ever permitted even to gaze for long upon the face of a pharaoh--so perhaps it is presumptuous to demand more of them dead than they gave when alive" (91).

Solid five-star reviews and for good reason, This book is a winner. Covers mummy religious and physical preparation and their later discoveries. The numerous photographs and sketches are handsomely done. It's a keeper.

This book is worth 10 stars. there is so much info in this book and it is very easy to understand. when i first looked at this book of 192 pages i thought i would never get through it all but it was so easy once i picked it up i couldn't put it down. if you are interested in learning about ancient egypt this is the book to buy.

This book looks like new! I saved money and the book is in great condition. The seller was very helpful.

It worked well enough for my paper.

But the book does not, and readers will be rewarded for their effort if they read this well-written and inviting volume." --Journal of Education and Christian Belief"This volume is a wise, sophisticated, eminently readable, and profoundly important contribution to the literature of higher education in America. The Jacobsens eloquently and persuasively shatter the wall that has too often precluded the serious examination of how intimately religion and higher education interact. Religion is already an active agent in higher education, in the lives of teachers and students, as well as in the world that higher education is designed to explain and serve. This book informs, challenges and inspires its readers as it weakens the facile distinctions between religious and secular thought."--Lee S. Shulman, President Emeritus, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching "An intelligent introduction to perhaps the most confused and contested issue on university campuses today-religion. By mapping key features of the contemporary discourse about religion and spirituality in higher education onto sturdy analytical categories from the academic study of religion, No Longer Invisible significantly advances an important conversation. If you are looking to understand religion on your campus-or wondering why you should bother to-read this book."--Patricia O'Connell Killen, Ph.D., Academic Vice President and Professor of Religious Studies, Gonzaga University "No Longer Invisible is a hugely valuable book and a highly enjoyable read. Religion is a powerful force in our public square and in our students' lives. How campuses engage this force will help determine what role faith plays in our future - a bridge of cooperation or a barrier of division, a source of inspiration, or an excuse for destruction. This book is a great resource for anyone who wants to work proactively to incorporate religion into higher education." --Dr. Eboo Patel, Founder and President, Interfaith Youth Core

No Longer Invisible is an account of "how colleges and universities across the country are re-engaging religion and how they can do that more intelligently and effectively" based on the Jacobsen's visits to over fifty campuses and conversations with hundreds of faculty, students, college administrators, and chaplains (vii-viii). Approachable yet academic, it offers important insight for all who are involved in the fields of religious leadership and higher education. The first part of the book seeks to describe the enterprise of American higher education and the shifting role of religion over the last four hundred years by identifying three eras: Protestant (1636 - late 19th century), Privatized (Late 19th century - Late 20th century), and Pluriform (Late 20th century - present) . Over the last few decades American religion has undergone two significant changes: (1) increasingly pluralistic culture and (2) the widespread acceptance of a new broader definition of religion that allows people to be viewed as religious who do not belong to an identifiable religious community. This new understanding of religion when combined with changes in university life [including (1) the rejection of epistemological objectivism and embrace of multiculturalism, (2) growth of professional studies and (3) growth of student-centered learning] has created an environment in which religion has regained relevance in higher education. The second part of the book offers chapter length essays considering six different sites of engagement in areas where religion and higher education overlap. The substantive data and helpful analysis contained within these pages deserves consideration by those involved in all aspects of higher education. The book ends with a brief conclusion that summarizes the authors' main arguments:Religion has returned to higher education in the last two decadesReligion, as it is now understood, is not an extraneous add-on to the enterprise of learningProviding proper attention to religion can be a means to revitalizing higher educationMost Christian leaders are well aware of the changing nature of American religion, but less well informed about the general shifts in higher education. Most professors and administrators are well aware of the changing nature of higher education, but less well informed about the general shifts in religious practice and understanding. Both groups benefit from the understanding advanced by the Jacobsen's. These leaders along with current and future students will benefit from the conversations and potential actions that follow.

A must read for anyone interested in religion/ spiritually in higher education. Great for faculty, staff & administrators.

The Jacobsens summarize their book as follows: (1) Religion has returned to higher education in a new pluriform shape. (2) Religion plays a significant role in higher education. (3) Attending more to religion can revitalize education. (153-154)Given that a picture is worth a thousand words, this table (56) summarizes the six loci of their concern, forming the titles of the core six chapters of the book. [Amazon reviews doesn't allow including tables, so I convert to an outline.]A. Historic Religion. 1. Ideas: Religious Literacy. 2. Practices: Interfaith Etiquette.B. Public Religion. 3. Ideas: Framing Knowledge. 4. Practices: Civic Engagement.C. Personal Religion. 5. Ideas: Convictions. 6. Practices: Character and Vocation.Although the primary voice is that of faculty members, we hear also from administrators, co-curricular educators, and students. For example, student voices are reported on pages 109, 123, 125, 129, 135, and 143.In a mere 200 pages, generalizations are inevitable. For example, "[A]cademically successful scholars usually speak in public only about those fields of study in which they have academic standing." (128) One doesn't have to reach very far to observe loud exceptions--exceptions that form the core of what students usually talk about in late-night dorm bull sessions: religion, sex, and politics. So we have speaking outside their field of "academic standing" evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins on religion, entomologist Alfred Kinsey on sex, and linguist Noam Chomsky on politics.More to the point, the generalization flies in the face of the very thesis that the Jacobsens promote so well: We are whole creatures who can't be fragmented into the professional and personal quite so easily.Who is the audience for this book? Maybe because I'm a fish (professing mathematics at the Jacobsens' institution, an institution of Christian higher education) I'm not aware that what I'm swimming in is water (the professional/personal engagement that is higher education). I found myself saying, "I knew that." Reviewer Greg Smith said that the book is for academicians who haven't reflected on the role of religion, and Christian leaders who haven't thought about higher education. Are there such people? Will they read a book like this? I'm not sure.If this book were titled in 16th century paragraph-as-title fashion, it might read "No Longer Invisible: Three Forms of Religion in Undergraduate University Education in the USA in the Second Decade of the 21st Century as Reported Primarily by Faculty Members in Interviews and in Writings: a Prolegomena."I finished the book. I am still left with the Jacobsens' big question, "How can we attend to religion in a way that will revitalize higher education?" It's especially hard to do in universities which have no core. As former University of Chicago president Robert Maynard Hutchins famously said, "A university is an aggregation of separate sovereignties connected by a common heating plant." [1] We academicians have a lot of work to do.[1] Mayer, Milton. Robert Maynard Hutchins: A Memoir. Berkeley: U. of California Press, 1993, pp. 97-98.
