Full Disclosure: I received an advance copy for the price of an honest review.I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. First, it's well-edited and logically presented. As a technical writer and editor by trade and by nature, that really DOES matter to me. Nothing makes me question the validity of an advice book more than poor editing and awkward organization. I can't relax and enjoy poorly presented writing of any kind.Yes, the book really IS funny. But more than that, the author gives clear, actionable steps for crafting humorous presentations--extremely valuable for those of us who speak in public. I also appreciate that the author shared his own fears of public speaking. He isn't one of those people who lives to stand in front of an audience. He started his public speaking journey just like the rest of us do--it came with a job. In his case, the job was a task he'd set for himself--helping a friend in need. I found it so easy to relate to his journey because all of the public speaking I've had to do has been job related. The other thing I appreciated about this book is how well the author shows that humorous public speaking requires actual WORK. No one will become funnier simply because of reading this book. However, anyone who follows the advice and exercises in the book will be able to better engage their audiences through artful use of humor.

I love David Nihill. I love this book. It was easy to read and easy to understand. Most importantly, it was FUN to read. It has helped me understand more about what is funny and why. I have a deeper understanding of joke structures and how to set them up. Humor is the way to winning people over (and maybe through their stomachs as well). Humor is a key ingredient to any successful speech, story, script, show, book, etc. This book gives perspective on how to find the funny and carefully place it in your material for the best result. A worthwhile investment!

At the outset, let me state that I received an advanced copy to review without cost.I'm a member of a local Toastmasters club, completed my CC and working on a double DTM (if you're into TM, then you know what I mean). I was raised on PBS, British comedies, and have a highly idiosyncratic sense of humour - meaning that, generally, only long-time friends and family members get my humour. I'm fairly adept at academic, inspirational and informational speaking, but felt that I could use some humour training. I found Mr. Nihill's blog very helpful. That's how I ended up getting to review the book. This book takes the info on the blog (and his information out there in inter-verse) to a whole new level. I've read it once and plan on reading it again very soon. I was so engrossed that I would make up fictitious spills on my tablet screen so my co-workers didn't know I was taking it into the lavatory to read during my water-closeting breaks. The tone is conversational, like a public-speaking mentor you go out for pints with (which might count for the bit of wordiness here and there). The examples and suggestions are realistic and easy to comprehend. This is not an academic treatise or a "philosophy of funny" thesis - it's a good, basic, nuts and bolts guide to developing the skills necessary to grow as a humourous speaker. Maybe it is a bit basic for those of you who are naturally gifted and who pull gufffaws out of people like bonobos pick chits out of fur, but for those of us who stumble in that area (being funny, not chit-picking), - the book is a real value. I wish I'd read this book before I gave my Humourous Speech Contest bomb on the Cain and Abel story. I'll be recommending it to a newbie Toastmaster I eventually get selected to mentor.Other than a free review book, I didn't get chit for writing this.

This book is hilarious, full of stories, and packed with useful information. I'd recommend this to anyone trying to get better at public speaking or just being funny in general. The book is filled with stories that illustrate his points. Then when you get to the end, he gives you a link to a page full of video clips to help you see what he's talking about in action. He also sums the book up for you in the end with his short 80 tips. (And here I was highlighting like a mad man.) Best of all, he invites all who buy this book into a private Facebook group where members can upload and help critique each other's presentations. With all these added bonuses, this book is more than just a book, it's an entire class! He could have charged $50-$100 or more and it still would have been a killer deal.

This book was excellent! Big thanks to David for sharing his journey and wisdom with us. Thanks to him and his book, I gained new insights and direction for my own goals and standards when preparing for any public speaking opportunity. So much so, that I'm recommending the book to my friends in the public speaking realm and will also make my impromptu speaking student competitors read it when they return to school in August. His efforts and words have had a positive impact on me.

“Narconomics” is about how drug cartels are taking pages from the playbooks of big businesses like Walmart and Coca-cola. In cases like diversifying into new markets or deciding to collude with a competitor, this might not seem surprising. However, it may come as a shock to find out about the franchising and CSR (corporate social responsibility) practices of drug cartels. Other than being outside access to the justice system, and thus resorting to violence to achieve what contracts, mediators, and courts would do for other businesses, the drug business it turns out is very much a business.Along the way a secondary story emerges that is just as interesting and even more important. It’s the story of how the drug war makes no sense from the standpoint of economic logic. Destroying fields in South America only makes for poorer farmers because their monopsonistic (i.e. single buyer) market pushes the cost of lost crops back onto them. And because raw product is such a tiny portion of retail price, their destruction has almost no effect on prices at the user end. Furthermore, as more US and European states legalize marijuana, it seems that this will have more of an effect at putting cartels out of business and ending their reign of violence than all the arms shipments and foreign aid for drug enforcement ever had.The book consists of ten chapters, each of which addresses an area of business practices that have been taken up by the drug cartels. Chapter one is about supply chains, and in the case of cocaine there is a rather long one. The raw product is grown in South America and must be infiltrated into the US—usually through Mexico. (For a while there was a prominent Caribbean route, but it was shut down—at least for a while.) This is where we learn about how the cartels adapt to eradicated crops, as well as how the product is marked up at various stages of the operation.Chapter 2 is about the decision to compete versus collude. We mostly read about the competition, because in a lawless market competition equals violence. However, over time cartels have been increasingly willing to agree on distribution of territory. Although, there are also clever means to compete unique to criminal enterprises, such as engaging in violence in someone else’s territory to cause the police to crack down there—thus making it harder for said opposition.Chapter 3 is about human resources, and the different approaches used to handle problems in this domain. In the movies, an drug cartel employee who fouled up always gets a bullet to the brain, but it seems that this isn’t always the case—though it certainly happens. Different countries and regions have differing labor mobility. In some cases, there is no labor mobility. (i.e. if one has a gang’s symbols tattooed all over one’s body, one can’t interview with a rival gang and Aetna sure as hell isn’t going to hire you.)Chapter 4 is about public relations and giving to the public. One doesn’t think about drug lords engaging in CSR, but in some cases they may be more consistent with it than mainstream businesses. The cartels face an ongoing risk of people informing on them, and at least some of those people can do so without their identities becoming known. Violence is often used to solve problems in this domain, but it can’t do it all. That’s why drug lords build churches and schools, and often become beloved in the process.Chapter 5 explores “offshoring” in the drug world. This may seem strange, but drug cartels, too, chase low-cost labor. But it’s not just about lowering costs, it’s also about finding a suitable regulatory environment—which in the cartel’s case means a slack one. An interesting point is made that all the statistics on doing business are still relevant to the drug business, but often in reverse. That is, if Toyota is putting in a plant, it wants a place with low corruption, but if the Sinaloa want to put in a facility--the easier the bribery the better.Chapter 6 describes how franchising has come to be applied to drug cartels—famously the Zetas. The franchisor provides such goods as better weaponry in exchange for a cut of profits. Of course, there’s always a difference in incentives between franchisors and franchisees when it comes to delimiting territory, and this doesn’t always work out as well for drug dealers as it does for McDonald’s franchisees. While the bulk of the book focuses on cocaine and marijuana, Chapter 7 is different in that most of it deals with the wave of synthetic drugs that has popped up. The topic is innovating around regulation, and so it’s certainly apropos to look at these drugs. If you’re not familiar, there are many synthetic drugs that are usually sold as potpourri or the like. Once they’re outlawed, the formula is tweaked a little. In a way, these “legal highs” may be the most dangerous because no one knows what effect they’ll have when they put the out on the street. In chapter 8 we learn that the drug world hasn’t missed the online retail phenomena. Using special web browsers, individuals are able to make transactions that are not so difficult to trace. In an intriguing twist, the online market may foster more trust and higher quality product than the conventional street corner seller ever did.Chapter 9 examines how drug traffickers diversify—most notably into human trafficking. Exploiting their knowledge of how to get things across the border, they become “coyotes.”The last chapter investigates the effect of legalization, and it focuses heavily upon the effects that Denver’s legalizing marijuana has had in Denver, in the rest of the country, and on the cartels. Wainwright paints a balanced picture that shows that not everything is perfect with legalization. E.g. he presents a couple cases of people who ingested pot-laced food products intended for several servings, and did crazy stuff. However, the bottom line is that legalization (and the regulation and taxation that comes with it) seems to be the way to go if you want to really hurt the cartels and stem the tide of violence, as well as to reduce the number of people showing up at the ER having ingested some substance of unknown chemical composition. There is an extensive conclusion, about the length of one of the chapters that delves into the many ways our approach to eliminating drug use is ill-advised and dangerous. This connects together a number of the key points made throughout the chapter.I found this book fascinating. Wainwright does some excellent investigative reporting—at no minor risk to life and limb. If you’re interested in issues of business and economics, you’ll love this book. If you’re not into business and economics, you’ll find this book to be an intriguing and palatable way to take on those subjects.

I am a conservative dentist, with conservative social views and conservative prescribing practices, who once thought I knew most everything about drug lords, drug addicts, and addictive substances. Then, in October 2014 we found our 24 year old son, dead in our bathroom with a syringe in his hand. I have spent the past 16 months in grief, depression, and wanting to deal with drug dealers in the most violent, painful means imaginable but with no means, plan, or intel to carry this out. The local police have basically have shown zero interest in his case, since they ruled us out as suspects. This book has made me realize that our nation's (world's) drug problem is an economic problem and needs to be addressed in those terms. This extremely well written and researched book gives me a set of arguments to present to our state representatives. An excellent and less emotional review can be read above by Loyd Eskildson

This is a fact based, rational examination of how drug cartels operate and by implication, why they continue to thrive. Although the author speaks in terms of the economics of a drug based business, one is logically lead to the inescapable conclusion that our past and current efforts to eradicate the drug trade are woefully misguided. This book is an enlightening and eye-opening dissection of narco economics. If you've ever wondered why the "War on Drugs" has been lost, you'll find a very entertaining and logical answers in the reading of this book.

This fellow writes like a freshman economics student at one of the ubiquitous socialism -infested junior colleges. He is so proud of having mastered a few economic concepts that his hubris completely prevents him from recognizing the mental gymnastics he must perform in order to reach his utopian solutions. I read about a quarter of the book before I had to put it down due to nausea inspired by his preachy, arrogant and juvenile attitude. If this guy ever grows up and has to deal with a few real world issues, he might write a book worth reading. I regret the time l spent giving this one too many chances.

Several years ago, someone introduced me to The Urantia Book. I had intended to read the entire 2000 plus pages of it, but never did as it was just too much. Recently, I ran into this book made up of "a collection of key passages from The Urantia Book" compiled by Kelly Elstrott. At 300 or so pages, it contains mostly passages from The Urantia Book and some brief commentary. This sounded like a way to get a flavor of the whole book in a lot less time, so I gave it a try.Much of what I read really spoke to me. Maybe it will to you too. I would recommend trying this shorter version if 2000 pages seems like a lot. There is some controversy over the source of the Urantia materials. I don't claim to understand all the hoopla and think it not necessary to go there. Here's one of my reasons for feeling this way, quoting from page 303 of The Fifth Revelation:"Like all other sacred texts, the contents should not be evaluated by relying on claims of authorship or authority, but rather upon the 'fruits of the spirit' which they produce. The new reader might explore the book as a fascinating piece of religious literature until such time as it spiritual quality authenticates its message and its source." This is really similar (if you look closely at least) to Matthew 7:15-20 if you prefer a biblical source:"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits."As I said, much of what I read in The Fifth Revelation really spoke to me, so I think there is something to this. I didn't see anything dangerous in it.Will I now read The Urantia Book? Maybe some day, but I have many other things I want to read first, and it takes a long time to get through 2000 pages.I should mention that I came across another (shorter) book based on The Urantia Book called, The Center Within: Lessons from the Heart of the Urantia Revolution by Belitsos and Harris. It is 290 pages and has quotes and lots of commentary. I did not like it as much as this one - see my review of it for details. One thing I found interesting was that Mr. Elstrott (the author/compiler here) is a chemical engineer from Louisiana. So am I. Not a group known for being spiritually adventurous. Just goes to show how wrong stereotypes can be.

Thank you so very much for providing the people of this precious planet with a synopsis of the Fifth Epochal Revelation, which will stand the test of time. This book compiled by Kelly Elstrott gives a wonderful 'birdseye' view of the main interesting points of the FER. It is very readable and interesting to any new-comer to the Urantia Book, and a great tool for an introduction. In praise love and gratitude to the Creator of all.Sincerely,Judy Nyland

Difficult read...

An excellent read.

This compilation on the Urantia book is one I love to shave with people looking for spiritual answers. The used ones are clean.

I thought that if God was consistent throughout time than Truth existed throughout time. I read everything from the Bible, the Koran, the Hermetical, alchemy, the Kolbrin, translated Babylonian texts, the Emerald Tablet, Buddha's teachings, Lao Tzu, and the Vedas. The Truth was consistent. Man tends to muddle up the Truth as they project the Truth onto their current socioeconomic culture but the original message was always the Truth. I read books on the history of religion, followed archeology religiously, studied quantum theory, Cosmology, new biology and still ached for more. Then I found the Urantia Book. It was complete. All my questions were there in a language I could decipher. Some concepts made me uncomfortable but it all fit together in harmony. Just as I imagined it would if I could have put all the pieces together myself. Thank you for allowing me to find it after such a long search.

Haven't we humans suffered enough at the hands of middlemen, those who presume to stand between us and God. Those who want to explain things to us because we're too lazy, stupid, etc., to get it own our own. I don't need anyone to tell me what I can get from The Urantia Book, and neither should you. Are you going to have a personal religious experience with someone else's ideas about a book? I don't think so, and if you did, just think what the real thing would do for you. The Urantia Book presents so many new and challenging ideas and concepts and information about so many things, how are you going to judge its validity? The only way to be 100% convinced of ANYTHING is through a personal experience of it. Unless of course, your the kind of person not likely to believe in or to be committed to anything, in which case nothing much really matters at all, does it. Yes, the book is long. Get over it and get on with it. It's long because there's so much to tell. You never know where your own personal religious experience is going to come from. At least give yourself the experience of experiencing the real thing. Read The Urantia Book first.

I really enjoyed the book by Kelly Elstrott. I listened to Kelly on a talk show one night and his insights inspired me to read the book and I'm glad I did. The book is a nice primer for the Urantia Book and I plan on abtaining a copy asap. My definition of a good book is one that inspires thought, reflection and the thirst for more. The fifth revelation falls into this category nicely.

Review

“A travelogue of love and scholarship. . . . [It] does the region splendid justice.” —The New York Times “Many have tried this before—to get hold of, in its entirety, the volatile, beautiful, relentlessly shifting Caribbean. Nobody has succeeded as dazzlingly.” —Marlon James, author of A Brief History of Seven Killings“This terrific travel narrative . . . is also a magnificent musical journey (reggae, salsa and ska), a literary odyssey . . . and a heartfelt historical voyage. Island People powerfully shows how places shape people, and how people shape places.” —The Observer “Joshua Jelly-Schapiro possesses both a humanist’s irrepressible empathy and a journalist’s necessary skepticism. Whether you're interested in Cuba or Jamaica, Trinidad or Puerto Rico, Haiti or the Lesser Antilles, this is the single best introduction to the Caribbean. Certainly there are scholars who know more about individual islands, but no one combines Jelly-Schapiro's breadth of knowledge--in history, literature, music, culture--with his writerly flare, on-the-ground reporting, and passion to show why and how "the Caribbean belongs at the center of any story we tell about the making of our modern world." An amazing work, ideal of teaching.Marlon James was right: "Many have tried this before -- to get hold of, in its entirety, the volatile, beautiful, relentlessly shifting Caribbean. Nobody has succeeded as dazzlingly as Joshua Jelly-Schapiro."

In ISLAND PEOPLE, Joshua Jelly-Schapiro takes his readers along with him on extended visits to more than a dozen Caribbean islands, including multiple chapters each on Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti. With an accessible style, he shares the islands’ commonalities and differences through their varied histories and their music, literature, art, and politics. Much is revealed through personal exchanges and island-roaming with new-found local friends and acquaintances. Jelly-Schapiro’s travels here span more than the past decade, and he sometimes revisits friends made in previous chapters, thus showing recent directions of change. This is not a tourists’ guide to hotels, restaurants, and sights. Rather, this is travel writing at its finest, perhaps the best first-person narrative of experiences across the Caribbean since the classic THE TRAVELLER'S TREE by Patrick Leigh Fermor was published in 1950.I bought the hardback of Island People when it was released in November 2016, and read it slowly over three weeks, savoring each story/chapter. I very much enjoyed revisiting islands, music, and books I’ve had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with in person, and contemplating others I’d still like to visit and get to know better. (Now added to my Bucket List thanks to this book are Montserrat, Martinique, and Dominica.) ISLAND PEOPLE is a big book. Literally. Wanting to re-read chapters while traveling myself, I also have bought the Kindle edition. It’s that good.

A fantastic book. Informative, entertaining and insightful a wonderful read. Highly recommended.

Really interesting read. Happened upon this by chance.

Insightful, engaging "off-the-tourist-map" perspective of the people, culture, and history of the islands.

I picked this up expecting to get a first-hand account of Caribbean life. This is nothing more than a privileged American's account of travelling. He spends his entire Jamaica section talking about Bob Marley. The Cuban section was OK, but spent more time giving a history lesson of Cuba than actually talking about the people of Cuba. I expected more out of this. Disappointed.

Boring and Racist

This is a very fine book, among the best available about the Caribbean. It is not a travel guide, it is not a history but has aspects of both. Jelly-Schapiro loves the islands, and knows them well. The book is a sort of travelogue, with sizable chunks of history mixed in, and a good deal of what might be described as participant narration, about celebrations, conversations, trips and such that he and friends from the various places did together. The writing is excellent, opinionated, sometimes humorous, sometimes a bit preachy and sometimes passionate. He knows a great deal about music, and it got a bit technical in places when he describes the music and history of music in Cuba, Jamaica and elsewhere. The book has a useless map and no illustrations; more of both would strengthen it. There's also no index, making it hard to look for something you read.It starts in Jamaica, with a lot about Jamaican music and the Marley folks. I was amazed to learn that one small area produced Marcus Garvey, Harry Belafonte and Bob Marley. There's a good deal about politics. Then he moves on to Cuba, and these sections are wonderful. There's a lot about life in Cuba, Cuban music, the Castros, and politics, and explores the difficult subject of white and black Cubans. He plainly likes Cuba and Cubans. One thing I had not read of before; Cuba imported 800,000 slaves 1790-1867 but got 30,000 refugees from the Haitian revolution and embarked on a deliberate campaign to whiten Cuba by bringing over peasants from places lie Andalusia and Galicia. The next section is on Puerto Rico, including a lot of history that will not be familiar to most Americans. The Spanish authorities also tried a campaign of whitening the populace, bringing in an amazing mix, not just Spanish peasants but also Catalans, French, Corsicans, Irish and Genoese. His discussion of the island as an American possession is damning of American assumptions and government. Then on to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He doesn't seem to like the Dominicans much, or at least their government, and much of the section is about Haitian folks in the DR, which recently decided to deport Haitians--only partly done, but the 1930s massacres of Haitians in the DR is in the background. His sections about Haiti are the best I have ever read about the island, mixing recent and longer-term history with politics--he likes the Haitians, really likes them. That's much of the book. The remainder is the smaller islands, including the Caymans, Grenada, Barbuda, Montserrat and Antigua. He discusses the politics of the revolution in Grenada in some detail, and again US policy and actions come across as ill-informed. The next section is on the French Guadeloupe and Martinique, one of the most interesting parts of the book. Much of it amounts to an analysis of the impact of two writers, Frantz Fanon and Aimee Cesaire, which some readers may find tedious, although their influence on the left and on African intellectuals has been great (not so much influence in the English-speaking world). A chapter on Dominica likewise is largely a discussion of the life of Jean Rhys (who wrote "The Wide Sargasso Sea")--but it uses that discussion to consider Dominican history and culture. The book ends in Trinidad, a lively section, with carnival, music and complicated politics, perhaps the best I have read about the place.Aside from the weaknesses of no index, no illustrations and a lousy map, this is an exceptional book that I recommend highly.

Review

“An earnest, accessible introduction to Smith’s ideas on the nature of virtue and happiness.”  —The Wall Street Journal"A remarkable book...Mr. Roberts’s witty, candid take on Smith is filled with his own wisdom. Gurus, theologians and economists alike might learn a thing or two from him and the first modern economist."  —The Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire “Roberts skillfully blends modern examples with Smith’s original.” —Financial Times"A wonderful new interpretation of Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments...A model of intelligent popularization and a great tool for teaching and learning....(Russ) is a great translator of economic ideas into the language of everyday life, and this book is a prime example of how very valuable that skill can be."—Yuval Levin, National Review“I loved it. A wonderfully readable appreciation of Smith's ingenuity. You can't fail to be entertained."–Clive Crook, BloombergView "Can economists teach us how to live a good life? When the economists in question are Adam Smith and Russ Roberts, the answer is a definitive yes. Roberts shines a fresh light on Smith’s ideas about morality and human nature and finds that these 18th century ideas hold up remarkably well in the 21st century.  This is a fun, fascinating, and original book that will challenge you to become a better version of yourself.” —DANIEL H. Pink, author of Drive and To Sell is Human “A great book. Makes you feel better about life, humanity, and yourself. Like having a conversation and a scotch with Adam Smith, or even better, Russ Roberts.” —NASSIM TALEB, author of The Black Swan “Russ Roberts has taken a brilliant but difficult classic—Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments—and written an engaging and inspiring meditation on virtue, friendship, and happiness. The result is a wonderful guide to living a good life.” —JONATHAN HAIDT, author of The Righteous Mind “Adam Smith was not just an economist; he also had penetrating insights into human nature that informed his rich, subtle, and revolutionary approach to moral philosophy. Russ Roberts combines a deep understanding of what Smith was on about with a fluent writing style to bring out the surprisingly modern implications of Smith’s thinking.” —MATT RIDLEY, author of The Rational Optimist “Russ Roberts has done us all a great service in capturing the essence of Smith’s wisdom about the emotional and psychological foundations of both the good life and a successful economy. This book is a pleasure to read and, what’s more, Adam Smith almost certainly can change your life.” —DIANE COYLE, author of The Soulful Science

This book is a good introduction to the ideas of Adam Smith in particular and of the thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment in general. The book can be read as a long explanation to an interesting paradox: Smith’s pessimism about human nature and his contrasting optimism about human society and human organizations.Adam Smith posited that we care more about the loss of our little finger than about the deaths of million people in some remote country, that we are self-centered, indifferent to other people's feelings of joy and sadness, and, to top it off, prone to self-delusion, good at deceiving ourselves. But Smith also believed that we humans desire to be respected and respectable, to be loved and to be lovely, and therefore, in certain social contexts, given the appropriate social norms, we care about others, and can even act with justice and benevolence. In addition, Smith argued that, in market interactions, in the commercial aspects of our lives, we can do much good to others unintendedly, we benefit other people by selflessly procuring our own material wellbeing. In sum, human selfish nature is consistent with other-regarding behavior in social interactions and with large-scale cooperation in market interactions. We are not angels. But we are no doomed either. This book expalins Smith's ideas in a concise and heart-felt manner. Sometimes the book can get too preachy. Sometimes the author’s interpretations of Smith’s ideas are too idiosyncratic. But I finished the book feeling not only that I have learned something valuable, but also that I have become (marginally) a better person. That’s all you can expect from any book.

I'm not usually in the habit of reading books on 18th century economist-philosopher's 2nd most famous work, but I like Russ Roberts a lot, and gave it a chance. Glad I did. Russ is thoughtful, and comes across as a genuinely good person. Adam Smith is surprisingly prescient for someone writing in 1759.Long-time fans of econtalk or Cafe Hayek won't be surprised to know that Russ weaves in thoughts on emergent order, Fredrick Hayek, and the 2008 financial crisis, and the book is better for it in my opinion. Finally, based on the one existing review (as of this time), I was expecting a heavy dose of the Talmud (not a bad thing), but I thought that review overstated it. Russ mentions it, but he also mentions Hume, Darwin, Hayek, Einstein, Warren Buffett, etc. Above all, this is exactly what the title says: an unexpected guide to human nature and happiness. Recommended.

Russ Roberts’ new book on Adam Smith is part introduction/summary and part self-help. Roberts takes a fresh look at Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments to see what we can learn about how to make our own lives better. Along the way, we are introduced to Smith’s ideas of morality, economics, and human nature. While I am familiar with Smith’s TMS and his approach to morality, I am no expert and the refresher of key elements and ideas was most welcomed. To understand Smith, one needs to return to him again and again. Like many profound thinkers, his insights seem obvious once you get them, but before that you need to go back to Smith many times to grasp what he is getting at.Roberts takes Smith’s insights and applies them to how one lives his or her own life. How should we think about the pursuit of material wealth and good? How do we treat loved ones, strangers? And what does that treatment say about us?One of the more interesting sections is where Roberts looks at what an understanding of Smith can tell us about making the world a better place. He doesn’t focus on grand gestures or big plans. It is more about the little things we each do every day: smiling at the store clerk, being honest and trustworthy, or being good at one’s work. All of these are things that are good to do, and they also help make the world better. Appealing to Smith’s idea that social norms and civilization evolves out of the aggregation of all the actions we all take, the more good actions we do, the better the world gets. We show other people what counts as goodness. We encourage other people to good. We reinforce our own habits of acting well. Conversely, when we do bad things – even small, seemingly minor things – we make the world a little worse.Roberts also examines the “Adam Smith Question”: how to reconcile the apparent (and I think seriously overplayed) inconsistencies between TMS and The Wealth of Nations (WN). The latter is supposedly focused on humans as self-interested actors while the former focuses on the so-called altruistic virtues of love, sympathy, and justice. Roberts’ response is that TMS is about how we interact with those we know and care about it: our personal interactions. WN is about our market and commercial interactions which are mostly with strangers and usually are one-off. Smith isn’t using a different theory of human nature; he is focused on understanding human nature in different contexts, so the focus is different. The nice way Roberts sums this up is: “Love Locally, Trade Globally.”This is a quick, easy read; worthwhile for anyone interested in Smith, morality, and those interested in how to live better in their own lives.
