I can't PRAISE this book enough. It helped me the most out of ALL the grief books I've read. I believe the core concept here is "exactly what you have lost." EX: 1) Having a handicap child, you lost all your dreams hopes for the future of life w healthy child. 2) death of SPOUSE - you don't automatically think about what ALL that spouse DID. Cook, clean, run errands, keep check book, do the taxes.The author really talks the emotions that come later, after the funeral, after all the friends & family go home. He answers why you feel this way.

There are many books on grief available in the Christian marketplace..this is a very good one for those who want to understand both the grief process and the road to recovery. It is well written and comprehensive. I have a library of books on this topic and work as a Pastoral Counselor in this area. This particular book would be a great text for a class. It is also a good resource for pastors who may not have received training in this area and yet run into it daily in their ministry.If you need to understand your own process or that of another person, this book will help. It is easy to understand and one that you can refer to time and time again.

This book was a gift, I actually bought four of them for my cousins who lost their mom/ wife very unexpectedly. All were very grateful and have turned to the book on hard days like her birthday she would have celebrated with them. I felt this was better than flowers, they have this book for the tough year ahead.

If you have ever attended one of Norm's half-day seminars, this book is very similar to everything he covers. There is so much important information here, whether you are experiencing loss through death of a loved one, your own physical illness, a move, a job change, loss of a dream, loss of innocence, you name it. It will help you treat yourself and others with more compassion. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

This is the 2nd book I read by H. Norman Wright, and it helped me as much as the first. He is so encouraging and makes you feel so normal with everythng being experienced. This book applies to so many areas of life and is good to read in general, not just when you are suffering a loss. Sooner or later we are all going to lose something or someone, and this really is a wonderful resource to have for those times. I have read both of his books through several times and given them as gifts. Highly recommend!

This author writes with compassion and understanding and has helped me as I deal with my changed life after the death of my husband. I have even taken notes so I can refer back to specific areas of interest. It is written from a spiritual viewpoint which pleases me because I believe in the hereafter and am looking forward to seeing my husband again. I am so glad he had the assurance his sins were forgiven and that he is waiting on the other side for me.

Bought this book and Charlie Walton's "When there are no words..." as possible gifts to friends in shock and grief over the sudden death of an adult child. Scanned the two books quickly & decide to give the Walton to the guy and this one to his wife. "When there are no words" is a quite short and 'straight from the shoulder' account of Walton's struggles, observations and advice following the sudden, tragic death of his son. Wright's book is a good deal longer and deals with a whole range of "losses in life" situations. A basic Christian perspective is evident in the author's analysis and discussion of these matters.p.s. so far (about a month) haven't had a response to the books from either recipient, so I suggest care in prescribing them!

Charles Martin has a gift for drawing you into the most prosaic of settings. A South Georgia swamp smell has sentimental meaning for a character, and you feel it too. His characters are great too: we meet the gritty--and funny--Uncle Willee, whose gentle humor is birthed of great tragedy.This author always seems to write of deep pain and suffering. He brings his protagonists through a journey that includes deep Job-like wrestling and out the other side. Yes, Charles Martin is a Christian, and while his books usually aren't "preachy," you can see the Christian thematic content and even a quote by Jim Elliott.Poignant as always, this story gives you something to rejoice in. The only thing I would warn a potential reader about is the writer's use of flashbacks. Whole chapters are written in different time periods, and while he normally does this well, at one point I was scratching my head: "when" is this happening? Just FYI.

As of today I need one more of your books for my kindle. That gives me the privilege of spending time with you whenever I need your words. I read this wonderful story about a year ago. I was blessed to be born and raised in a large, loving family. We were confident in our role of siblings..loved and cherished. This story is about feeling lost in a world while others seem to belong. It's about looking for love and acceptance in the world of foster care. Sadness, joy, tears and forgiveness is the backbone of this story. It's a difficult journey but one that will leave you at peace. Mr Martin thank you. You are SPECIAL. God bless

Chasing Fireflies is one of the best books I've read so far this year. I don't know exactly what I was expecting when I started this one, but I definitely got a whole lot more that I was expecting. These characters have such depth, and the story captivates on so many levels. At first, I didn't care for the baseball references (not a sports fan at all). I was even debating whether or not I wanted to continue reading if it was going to be a sports book. It it so much more than that. I love everything about this book. It's going on my favorites shelf.This book is filled with so much emotion, such wonderful characters, and a captivating story with a beautiful ending. Highly recommended!

Author Charles Martin gives his readers wonderful stories with interesting plots, great characters and excellent dialogue. This is the 5th book of his that I've read, and all have been extraordinary.. or darn close to it!Though integral to the story, I was distracted by so much time being spent on describing the geography of where the story took place, and I felt that this slowed-down the pace of the story, somewhat. Too, I was disappointed with the ending, which I felt didn't quite wrap-up things as neatly as I'd have liked .On the other hand, I loved the wittisisms of Unc Willee, and the overall poignancy of the story. Personaly, I feel that any story that illustrates a "life's lesson" is worth reading, and Author Charles Martin is a Master at doing just this.All-in-all, even with the issues I felt were short-comings, if you are looking for fiction done right, pick up this book and I'm pretty certain that you'll be glad you did.

I am turning 60 this year, and I have done a lot, mostly in spite of the father I never had. I genuinely enjoyed this story of love between a son and a father that never gave up on each other. I never had that dad, he was too immature and didn't know how to be a man, but was himself a child who never grew up. Thus I have had to learn and fail and get back up and be my own father to my own little boy self and learn to love myself as my own father could not. I am somewhat envious of the boy who had an uncle who would not stop being his real father, mine was not that strong or brave. Yet I am not entirely green with envy because I recognize the hard and painful effort that Uncle Willie put forth as the same healing effort that I have had to commit to giving freely to my soul. Pain is love and attention is how we deliver it. This is a good story of good men and the women who love them.

I have this book to thank for a week of late nights; I could not put it down. What a beautiful story of love and loss and redemption. It was suspenseful, moving, and inspiring—a remarkable combination. Uncle Willee is a saint, certainly a man to be emulated. I can’t wait to read another book by Charles Martin. It’s been quite some time since I read When Crickets Cry, but I can’t resist picking up another by this talented author now.

Chasing Fireflies was an awesome book. It started a little slow, but WOW! The author had so many wonderful ways of explaining and thinking about life. Parts of it are pretty dark and parts are unbelievable, but it's one of the best stories I've read. Even the part after the story is good when he explains how he came up with the Uncle Willie character. I will definitely be reading many more books by Charles Martin.A couple quotes from the book that really made me think:"Sometimes good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.""You can say whatever you want about something, but that doesn't change what it is."

This is an awesome story about how a man can be a father to a boy, even when he's grown up. The author has a great sense of place, painting a picture of Brunswick, Georgia. Sketch is a little boy with no past. Chase is a young man with no past. Together, they find identity and the family. The book is full of homespun wisdom that is biblical in nature. The story reeks of love and redemption. I highly recommend it!

I picked this book because I was so impressed with the other Joes 2 Pros SQL books and this one did not let me down.My student understands the concepts and is able to apply them much easier than a large technical book. There is a great flow to the book and we are able to build on what we have learned quickly. At the rate we are going we will finish this book in no time and I feel good that we can look at some of the more technical books in the future since we have built a solid foundation using this book.This book is highly recogmended for the classroom or individual study.

I come from a background of biology and many a times felt that I could use a software to make various aspects of my work easier. Having had no background in programming I ended up struggling a lot all this while till I decided to learn a bit of programming myself. This book proved to be a great help as it gave me a really good start. All the concepts are explained very nicely with ample examples.I am completely satisfied by this book and am looking forward to more books from this author. This book gives an excellent introduction to beginners and explains complex concepts quite nicely and simply to beginners. The language is quite accessible and the examples presented have been very helpful in grasping the concepts which they were presented with.

I knew very little programming before. But this book helped me to get be back on track. Strongly recommended for beginners. It contained examples which helped me understand internals of C#.

Excellent practice examples and straightforward explanations of concepts. I learned so much from this one book, and each chapter was very satisfying in how it build on concepts from previous chapters.

I was looking for a book to quickly bring me up to speed on c# and this book helped me catch up and prepare for interviews within 2 weeks.

This was simply a phenomenal book on fatherhood. All of Eric's stories made me feel like an inadequate dad but I'm okay with that because it motivated me to work on myself. Enter this book without the ego and with an open mind and you're sure to walk away a different man.

I was hoping for more. The book itself is entertaining but Im skeptical on how much useful information there is on parenting. For instance, the son doesn't want to do his homework so navy seal dad smashes his skateboard and throws the ps4 into the pool and makes the son jump in to get it... a little extreme. The book is more seal stories than parenting advice.

Couple chapters in and I was hooked. I served in the Navy as well and use/have used many of the principles I was taught while serving in raising my 3 kids. Discipline, accountability, neatness, physical fitness, self control, attention to detail, loyalty, and teamwork to name just a few. Raising young boys to become fine young men doesn't happen by accident. You need a plan, and it takes effort...every day, even when YOU don't feel like it. This book will help you develop your own plan that meets your needs.

I get the marketing appeal by naming the book “Raising Men”, but I found it to be applicable if you are “raising men or women”.In fact, Eric himself has daughters and uses very good examples applicable to girls.This book has many valuable guidelines to help your kids develop confidence, responsibility, respect, courage and discipline, which are essential qualities that require consistency, discipline and leadership by ourselves, the parents.In summary, a very good book.

I enjoyed this book... a lot. It's a whole new perspective of how to do this (parenting) the best way we possibly can by improving ourselves first. I learned many valuable concepts and lessons, not necessarily parenting-related.And I also think it can be applied to any kid, regardless the gender.

One of the best books I have read on being a better parent and a better person. My wife is reading it now too I enjoyed it so much. Eric knows his stuff and this book is one I will go back through time and time again.

About the Author

Author and math teacher Marilyn Burns is noted for her many books that instill an interest and enthusiasm for mathematics into her school-age readers. This book is a great introduction to kids of different shapes and how they are found everywhere in our world. It's a cute story about a triangle who wants to try new things (be objects made of other shapes) so he changes and enjoys new experiences. As he changes the author notes the number of sides he has, the name of the shape he changes into, and explores all of the objects the "triangle" can be in his new shape. In the end the triangle wants to be himself again, so there's the added lesson about loving yourself instead of envying others. The pictures are colorful and the different shapes stand out and have personality. I read this book to first graders before going into a geometry unit, and they just loved pointing out all of the objects in the pictures made of the triangle's new shape. After the story the students were very keen on finding shapes in the classroom. They were really excited to learn about shapes after the story.

It is a fantastic book to introduce or review polygons with children. As a second grade teacher I used it to have my students review the differences between different polygons. The students created the shapes with geoboards while I read the story aloud. It's very creative in usinging different examples of where the shape could be found in the real world (the triangle's and my favorite spot is when people put their hands on their hips to create a triangle.)

I work in an inner city school. Believe me when I say that they are a tough group to please! They were absolutely enthralled with The Greedy Triangle! It opened up discussion in the class more than any other book I have read to them this school year. It is colorful, creative and fun. You can have the students use toothpicks and gummy bears to create the greedy little triangle and then change shapes as it metamorphisizes. Food is a great motivator. A fun way to instill a love of both reading and geometry. When the book is over, the kids can be "greedy" and eat their creations. Trust me, they will never forget the lesson.

I bought this book for a lesson plan I did for my practicum. It was great quality and arrived quickly. A great book to reinforce concepts about quadrilaterals.

This is such a great story that inspires so many lessons across the curriculum. Students will certainly learn a lot about geometric shapes and make connections to where these shapes are in the real world. However, there is an underlying theme of a character who is learning to love his identity and this is equally important. The images are creative and I have loved using this book as a read-aloud!

This is a great book for teaching about geometry! I highly recommend it! My kids love hearing it read to them.

I used this book when teaching a 3rd grade lesson on polygons. Throughout the story, as the Greedy Triangle becomes greedier for change, a new side is added to its figure. As the story progresses, you see the Greedy Triangle in its different forms. I appreciate how the author relates each new figure that is presented to figures that are seen in "real life"; the colorful illustrations support this. Eventually, the Greedy Triangle questions if its new figure is indeed a good fit. My students enjoyed listening to this story and they even asked me to put the book back on our class bookshelf weeks after our geometry unit was over. This book is useful to teach math and reading concepts; it's a great way to introduce and review 2D geometry terms as well as teach story elements (characters, setting, etc.).

Call me crazy...but I feel like a book with "on a shoestring" in the title should really spend more time reviewing budget accommodations and skip the expensive hotels. Planning a backpacking trip to Central America and thought this would cater more to a budget traveler but really kind of disappointed.The information isn't bad, so far it mostly seems to align with what I've found online, haven't left for my trip yet though so I can't really verify that yet. Does a decent job of providing a little information about a lot of different places...CA is pretty big so expecting one book to cover everything would be unrealistic.Mostly just disappointed that more focus isn't given to true low budget options.
