Early readers can be such a pain. They have to be easy to read, so they include a lot of very short, repetitititive sentences. I bet you can quote Dick and Jane here: See Spot. See Spot run. Run, Spot, run! Run, run, run! Short, easy to read, lots of practice with those three words... and boring as HECK. Who wants to read that more than once?Or they do the same thing, but with rhyming: See the cat. The cat is fat. The fat cat sat. Sat on the mat. The fat cat sat on the mat. See the rat!Ye gods. Now your kid will always be able to read -at words, but they'll read them all in a dreadful monotone, ill-suited for anything other than the phone book. Gotta indoctrinate them young to think reading is dull and boring!Well, there is hope. Elephant and Piggie! This series does everything right.First of all, the text is all dialog. Exciting, funny dialog with LOTS AND LOTS OF EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!! Ever see a first grader write? EVERY! SENTENCE! NEEDS! AN! EXCLAMATION! POINT!!!! YES IT DOES! You can't help but ham it up when you read, no matter HOW much you hate reading.And when there is repetition - as there needs to be, to help children practice - it's natural. Piggie will say something, and then Elephant will repeat it in a disbelieving way. Or Elephant will say something and Piggie will repeat it to agree with him. Elephant: You need help. Piggie: You are right. I do need help.Secondly, the pictures are active and engaging and funny and dramatic. Not much distracting detail, either. But while the pictures are so active and engaging and funny and dramatic, they provide a LITTLE bit of help to the shaky reader... but not so much that they think they can look at the picture and not bother with those troublesome words.Thirdly, the books are just interesting. When you're learning something now, you have to do it more than once. It's good for kids to re-read the same books over and over again... and I'm sure it saves the teacher money on stocking her classroom shelves! But what child, honestly, wants to read a beginning reader again? It's boring! They read it once, are you happy? Now they want to get to the good stuff!I promise you, kids will want to read these books over and over again. I don't know through educational experience, no... but I know through watching my own two nieces. I know through looking at adults eagerly picking up these books to read. Adults! There's just something about them.Mo Willems has the magic touch, I'll tell you that.

We are big fans of Mo Willems and the Piggie and Elephant series at our house! This story pitches Piggie's positive, free-spirit take on life against Gerald's (Elephant) cautious take on life. She, yet again, brings Gerald around to seeing that all things are possible. Not as humorous as some of the other stories in the series, I thought, but fun nonetheless.

My daughter (5) has recently discovered Mo Willems at her school library. She loves all the books and the words are simple and repetitive which help with identifying site words and learning to read. Wonderful books for young children!

Having a 4 year old on the edge of the autism spectrum is a blessing and a curse -- sure, she taught herself to read at the age of 3, but try finding something she *wants* to read out loud. Even better, find something that helps teach natural speech intonation and provides massive opportunities to explore feelings, emotion and humor -- how great would that be for a kid with significant social and speech delays?(Oh, wait -- that would be Elephant and Piggie! They act out simple, short and funny stories, full of emotion and humor. The dialog (and it's pretty much all dialog) is also short, fun, repetitive, and presented in color coded speech bubbles, so you always know who's speaking. Basically, an early reader's dream come true. My daughter is in love with the cute little girl pig (did I mention she was *pink*?) and about the second time through said, "I'll be Piggie". So now she reads/acts Piggie's dialog while the rest of us read/act for Gerald the elephant and the various other bit parts.Her dramatic reading intonation is improving (you can tell questions from exclamations by tone, now) and she enjoys the humor of the stories as well, often incorporating the scripts into her regular speech -- on our way to the airport she started saying, "Today I will fly!" in her Piggie voice. (Needless to say, we replied "You will not fly today. YOU WILL NEVER FLY!" just like Gerald.) Even my 7 year old enjoys them, and will often volunteer to play a small role (like the dog or duck).The books are just so well written -- so well *crafted* -- that they're just a pleasure to read. After wading through rivers of drek trying to pass for childen's "literature", I just can't recommend these books highly enough. These books feel as classic as Seuss and as humorous as Boynton, and for an asd kid who's also an early reader, they're a double blessing.(Oh -- about my comment concerning feelings and emotions, I'm referring merely to wonderful illustrations of Gerald and Piggie and the emotions they convey. It provides us with a chance to say things like, "Does Gerald look skeptical? I don't think he believes his friend Piggie can really fly," and "Wow, Gerald really looks surprised! Is he surprised because Piggie is flying?" More humorous twist at the end than touchy-feely ;-)How on earth can a cartoon elephant look so skeptical, anyway?

I love everything else I've read by Mo Williams to date, but this one kind kind of puts me off.Piggie decides she will fly. Then elephant spends half the book telling Piggie she will not. It just strikes me as oddly negative every time I read it to my kid.

I absolutely love the Elephant and Piggie books! Bought this book for a Christmas gift to add to my daughter's collection. She is going to be so excited. We have fun and lots of giggles when we read these together, changing our voices to go along with the story. Can't wait to read this one.

Today I Will Fly! (Elephant and Piggie)The Elephant and Piggie books FLY out of my classroom for home reading and are in great demand at the reading table~~better than Seuss for high interest. Contains just the right amount of text for beginning readers and lots of high frequency word practice. Yes, its broad-brushed. Yes, there are times when it is a little too harsh. Yes, some details may be applied in different ways according to context. There's no doubt Paul Washer is an intense guy. But there is also no doubt to me that he has his finger on the pulse of the American church and he has found but a very faint heartbeat. Washer's ten indictments are nothing new and all of them may not apply to us or to our church situations but I urge Christian readers to give Washer's thoughts a fair hearing. I put Paul Washer in the category of men like Leonard Ravenhill and Keith Green, of preachers like AW Tozer and Vance Havner. What they said wasn't always just right, but it was always memorable and the part that was right had such a way of getting to the heart of things that you couldn't help but be moved. I am thankful for brother Washer and pray that I will take to heart the message of this book.

This is the kind of message the church needs. And it is so, because it is from the Bible, exclusively. Al Christians should be aware of the dangers of not having the Word of God as their rule of life. The sufficient Word is the place to know the person of Jesus and the way to properly worship Him. This is a strong message that is similar, in a sense, of Johnathan Edwards' 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God'. The church needs this message. We need such a message. I needed that message. A must read book!

Much like Ravenhill and Tozer, Paul Washer is not one to hold back. His book "Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church" is a great example. In this short book, you will find much to challenge you. I don't agree with every perspective Washer has, but honestly hearing the hard-hitting message is refreshing in a day where so much of Christian publishing seems very weak and overly consoling. Don't get me wrong, we do need comfort. But there are also times when we need to be shaken deeply.The 10 indictments are as follows:1. A denial of the sufficiency of Scripture2. An ignorance of God3. There is always the danger of feeling like we are not doing enough and working our way into a legalistic, and even condemning, state of life. We are all called to different ways of living out our calling and life. Some are called to a more separate way of life, while others are not. Some can drop everything and become what we normally think of as a full-time minister (really we are all full-time ministers regardless of our occupation), but not all are called to that level of sacrifice. If not balanced with a firm understanding of grace, a book like this can cause people to struggle with condemnation rather than conviction, hence the four-star rating. Still, we could all use a little more reading that makes us search ourselves more closely.If you want a challenging read that will stir your heart, pick up this book.

Paul Washer's love for Christ is so intimate it is almost painful. Such a yearning, such a longing to become more like Christ everyday. Pauls Washer has presented some very important facts about the state of the church, the state of evangelism and he backs every single point with the Word of God. Paul is right when he said there is but one Gospel, the Gospel of Christ. Because of our love for Christ, we will be moved to be obedient to His word. I could sit here and write a complete book review on Washer's book, however what I will say is simply that I felt like I have already been to church reading his book, I was so humbled and moved by his sincere urging. I noticed many have referred to Paul Washer's "hate". What hate? I did not read anything that made me believe that he hated, but that he is urging the church as a whole to get right with God. We do not need a counterfeit gospel. The gospel should not be for sale. Christ freely gave. We are saved by the grace of God, and as Paul pointed out, the gospel of Christ, salvation, atonement, regeneration, holiness, etc. is hardly ever mentioned anymore. What are the people being saved from? And why? We can agree to disagree but the Bible states that it is the word of God. If we cannot trust the scriptures and take them literally, why read them at all? May God continue to bless and use Paul Washer.

I love the idea of using chickpea flour and was very excited to try it out, and this book has a very good into explaining why it's a great flour to use. I've tried several of the recipes from the book, though, and haven't been as impressed as I thought I'd be with the results. For baking, chickpea flour is very dry! I made the spiced date and honey bread, and found it to be super dry and not very flavorful. It could probably use some oil in the recipe. The lemon-blueberry muffins looked just like the picture and were ok, but tasted like corn muffins to me. Pumpkin-sage gnocchi had really no pumpkin flavor, but was fun to make (I had never made gnocchi before). I did like the sweet potato falafel, but a serving suggestion would be nice with this one. The desserts I made were chocolate fudge saucepan brownies (had a grainy texture was fairly crumbly, but flavor was fine) and browned butter blondies (which were super sweet and had a caramel-y texture). The roasted red pepper hummus I made tasted just like what you can get in the store, and though it was a little more work than what I've made in the past, the results were much better (smoother texture) than when I made it using canned garbanzo beans previously.As for content of the book, here are some general features I would like to see in a book like this:1. Pictures for every recipe! Not all of these foods are familiar to me, so pictures give a better idea of what you're dealing with.2. Nutritional information for the recipes! Especially since this is a book based on the premise that cooking with chickpea flour is a healthful way to prepare food, this seems like a glaring omission.3. A more detailed table of contents. It only lists the broad categories of dishes, not the names of individual dishes in the categories. The book does at least list the recipes at the beginning of each section, but even there it doesn't list the variations detailed in the margins of the recipes themselves, which basically make different dishes. (For example, the blueberry muffins can be transformed into lemon blueberry or browned butter raspberry muffins, and there are 7 different recipes for hummus in addition to the basic one which is only listed as "hummus" in the list of recipes. Those variations often sound better than the headlining recipe and would be useful to have in the outline.)So overall, I'm glad I have the book, and will continue to use it, but my initial expectation that cooking with chickpea flour would be as good if not better than using standard flour has been dampened. I have a different chickpea flour cookbook on order, and I'm hoping for more impressive results from that one.

A great guide for cooks desiring to eliminate wheat from their diet with healthy chickpeas. The recipes do not contain the multitude of strange and exotic ingredients that the gluten-free baking recipes do, only what you normally find in your kitchen and regular grocery store. That works for me!

I made the chickpea "flour" tortillas and they came out amazing!!! Very easy to do. Prep was simple. Can't wait to try out the rest of the recipes.

Coming from someone who can't have grains and most flour alternatives (almond, coconut, tapioca, etc.), this book is a lifesaver! Many of the recipes are familiar and versatile- double crusted pie (perfect for chicken pot pie), breadsticks, graham crackers, double chocolate cake, muffins, no-corn bread, dumplings (could be used in chicken and dumplings), fritters (donuts), biscuits, and so much more! The one recipe book I have where nearly every recipe is bookmarked. You must check out this book if chickpea flour is well-tolerated, and you're looking for more ideas! All the recipes we've made so far have been successes, and I'm eager to try more!

I love this book! The pictures are beautiful and so far, the recipes I've tried have been keepers. My husband and I have eaten very little meat for a long time, but a few years ago, we took the step of becoming lacto-vegetarian, and naturally beans are a staple for us. I first discovered chickpea flour a couple of years ago while searching for a tofu substitute for soy, as we avoid soy now for many years. (The chickpea tofu is fabulous!) The author has been very thoughtful in addressing the typical obstacles and has noted by the recipes appropriate variations (for example, for vegan). My favorite so far is the Chocolate Fudge Saucepan Brownies (no cocoa!).

Tried the thumbprint cookies and they were amazing. Been baking gingerbread, pumpkin pie, anise, and clove cookie versions of this same cookie with great success each weekend. Tried the suggested substitution of sunflower butter for tahini and that was amazing also. Great recipe. Also tried the bread sticks recipe. After storing in a glass jar for a few days they were fantastic! Hard and crispy and high protein. Can't wait to try more recipes - going to try a cracker recipe next.

I got this book and the library, and I put post-it notes in almost all the pages, so it is now on order. The first recipe I made was the pumpkin bread. After being gluten - deprived for so long, how wonderful to smell homemade bread in the oven on a cool fall day! I cut the sugar down from 1 1/2 C to 1 C and added a dropper of butter toffee stevia drops. Next time I will add more spices. The texture was fantastic. Can't wait to try more!

I'm finally accepting that my gut no longer tolerates refined wheat flour, whether soft and white or nutty whole-wheat. As a result, I'm exploring other grains. Almond flour (I prefer unblanched) has its uses but so often recipes for alternative flours also require a chemist's cabinet to make the flour "work". Not so with garbanzo flour...at least when you have this cookbook to guide you. Even if all you make are the "pancakes" that can be used as wraps or the half-sheet pan of thin "bread", it's a success. But then we get a selection of other ways to use it, still without the chemist's cabinet, and I'll probably work my through each recipe. The tips for recipe change-ups are helpful, and the recipes themselves aren't so complex and time consuming that just reading them is exhausting. Try the garbanzo flour and this cookbook to guide you along. You won't regret it.

I found this book after searching for the furniture maker of a family heirloom on Google. The results led to some scanned pages from this book that had the information I was looking for. Based on what I read online, I knew I wanted to have the physical book on hand for reference and to learn a little bit more about furniture that came out of that part of Massachusetts in the same era. There weren't a lot of copies of this book printed, and it doesn't show up on the used market very often, so I'm glad to have finally found a print edition I can keep on my bookshelf!

If you have more than a passing fancy for Antiques, maybe restore furniture, build some furniture and what to know more about the origins of many wonderful Early American pieces of furniture this book is a fantastic resource. If you are studying about Early American furniture or Conservation of Antiques the documented resources of woodworkers, cabinetmakers, clock makers and history of this area is exhaustive. The plates are well done, well written and beautiful. Overall the quality of the binding, paper, printing and photos make this worth the $$ and a permanent part of any library. Completely fulfilled my expectations and more.

Great detailed book of wonderful regional pieces.

This book combines a wonderful look at the life of people in Cape Cod and Southern Massachusetts with a scholarly look at the furniture created by the local craftsman of the day.

A very well researched book on a topic that has not received much attention. It was interesting to read how furniture style from larger markets such as Boston and Newport affected other areas. The section on the influence of the John Bailey family of Hanover in clockmaking shows how they trained one third of the area clockmakers of that period. I would hope that this book will spark an interest in further research of local furniture makers of the period.
