If you are reading this review, please read it to the end, even though it is a little long. If you already have some knowledge of German - not a lot, but some - this book will make you feel like you are almost fluent, even though you aren't. I was amazed at how much I could understand, and I was very entertained while learning. And you almost certainly will learn. This book, as far as I can tell, is based on the language learning concept of comprehensible input. Quite frankly, I've never experienced anything like it. These stories will take you places you have not been if you are only experienced with conventional instructional techniques. Extremely well crafted and obviously well thought out, this book is a pleasure, not a task to read. Having said all that, I do have these "extra" comments: This volume contains the first four books of an eight book series. I have read it all the way through, but I haven't yet completed any of the books after these four, though I have purchased them and have started on the 5th book in the series. These books are quite explicit when it comes to consuming alcohol. Some of the stories include passages where some characters are quite intoxicated. There are a very few passages that could be construed as very mild hints of recreational drug use by peripheral characters, mentioned only in passing and not developed in the stories at all, In one story there is an unexpected encounter of the principle character with some street Junkies. This is played in a very dramatic and sympathetic way: the principal character feeling the sadness and hopelessness of the situation and regret that there is nothing that can be done for them There are a few, very few, relatively mild oaths used in a few conversational passages. There are a few quite innocent romantic interludes. I have found no sex in any of the books so far as I have read. There is also an unfortunate choice of fonts which in one story, in one particular passage only, caused me to mistakenly perceive a dialectical quote as containing an extremely vulgar word. In the question and answers at the end of the section in which this occurs, the word appears again this time in the commonly used font, which reveals the word NOT to be that vulgar word. The first encounter of that word in the "bad" font was a bit of a shock, however. I greatly enjoy and appreciate this book. In addition to improving my German comprehension, I am also getting a lot of fun and cultural knowledge out of reading it. I recommend the book highly, but suggest being aware of the prospect of encountering material described in the above mentioned extra comments.

This was actually my first ever book in German that I've read. There's dozens of extremely common words in German that you think you know that you actually don't, such as immer, doch, or schon. The only way to learn words like these is to see them in context hundreds of times. This book also helped me to get a grasp of the German sentence structure. The author recently released a second compilation that contains books 5 thru 8. I plan to read through all those too.

This is an excellent reader. Not extremely challenging but a good vocabulary builder and reading comprehension builder. This book is also much better than buying the small books separate (which are too short to be worth the money). The stories are interesting, but also more real life kinds of stories (which is to help the reader learn commonly used phrases). This is worth the money for people learning German.

It is a good beginner's book or one to review German taken fifty years ago. The vocabulary is interesting, so I found it useful. Hey, at least it was not printed in gothic script like my German book those many years ago. The only disappointment was that I had already purchased the first two books included in this four book compendium. I'll wait on getting any of the next four, figuring they will combine them.

Excellent intro text for learning German. Easy, fun stories that allow you to expand your knowledge of the language.

My students love these stories! They contain vocabulary learned in their textbooks, contain important cultural information often *not* covered in said textbooks, and have many fun and humorous moments.

A lot of fun to read, partly because of the character of Dino, but mainly because the German is simple enough that one can understand most of it even if one is a beginner--so it's very confidence building, and excellent for vocabulary building.

Fun reading and a nice way to learn German. I like the humor and simple sentences which make learning the language easier. Vielen dank Andre Klein.

I tried to be cute and buy this book 1st instead of the ventilator book that was a mistake. I would recommend reading the ventilator book before reading the advanced ventilator book although this book was very informative as a nurse I only really needed to know the information presented in the ventilator book. The one useful thing about this book was that it talked about ECMO which prior to reading that chapter I had very little to no understanding about. Some of the other chapters had a lot of equations and chemistry in them that as a nurse you don’t need to know.

Not the ultimate reference, but a well reasoned compendium of respiratory care with heavy focus on ARDS. Helpful for nurses, doctors, and students alike.

Concise, helpful, clear. I like how it summarizes in a few quick bullets at the end of each chapter.

Greater depth than the introduction book, very clear and well explained.Great review for anyone working with ventilators, the Kindle version is best for me.

Did its job, its a book..

Good book for respiratory technicians

To the point and very practical. Information just needed.

What an amazing read. Great overview of basic concepts.

I'm almost finished with this book! It is a great read. In the first half of the book he just verified what I already knew from experience. Sometimes you need to see it spelled out and just laid out. I wish I would have had this book 35 years ago. My parents although well intended did not teach me how the world works and what people do. I could have avoided A LOT of heartache and pain I received by being preyed on by some purely evil people. Dr. Phil does an excellent job of describing the real way things are now. And also shows there is light in the world and how to come out on top without having to be a snake in the grass yourself to compete or deal with those types. I wish he had a version of the book written for teens and tweens. But I definitely recommend getting it yourself and then sitting down with the kids you care about and talking to them about all the stuff in this book in a kind loving manner. I can testify that he is on point with this book as a lot of things in this book I have dealt with personally .

I was not of a big fan of Dr. Phil, however I was a big fan of his spouse Mrs. Robin McGraw. When I was going through one of the rough patches of my life, it just happened to Robin’s first book “Inside My Heart” (2006) came out. It still is one of my favorite books that had sparked in me about the importance of taking care of you as a woman, wife, and mother … another review for another time. Back to the subject... Next I was again going through another rough patch of my life, it just happened to Dr. Phil’s “Life Code” (2013) came out. After I read the “Life Code”, I became a big fan of Dr. Phil. All contents of the book is extremely useful and true an eye opener.“Life Code” is a book may or may not help one to win in the “Real World” everyday for sure, but this book will definitely help one, at least, shed some lights on what he/she is doing wrong, who are these people he/she is dealing with, so that one can take steps towards changes, fight smart and get out of the victim mentality.I have been a life long bullying victim since my early childhood. I have never understood as to why I was always picked on even though I was not a weak individual by any means. I hoped for my life will get better as I get older. Nope, bullying got worse as I got older at my work places. As you read this previous sentence you might think that something could be very wrong with this individual. Yes and No! I used to think that “Everything will be good, because I am a good human being, I have very good values, I am an extremely hard worker and I always help others and care about others” etc. Indeed, it is all true about me. I probably am one of the nicest, kindest and caring persons one will ever meet. But THAT IS the PROBLEM!If you are TOO nice, naive, generous, forgiven, people pleaser and sensitive, there are so many “Vampires” everywhere. I call them “Vampires”, because they have cold hearts and try to suck the life out of you for their benefits and progresses. You are nothing to them. They take advantage of you and try to control and manipulate you for their successes. They want to accomplish what they want at any cost, it does not matter if you are a nice person, a hard worker, an honest individual or have a difficult life or may be living under poverty line and you need that check to pay bills and feed your starving kids, or you are sick and has been ill for a long time. They will squash you down to get what they want in the “Real World“. Many of these kinds of “Vampires” are in power and accomplish what they want. They are everywhere! They want to be in control and they want power and money.“Life Code” The New Rules for Winning in the Real World exposes about the “Life Codes and Rules”, that provides tools and arsenals to fight with the cold-hearted, malicious and manipulative life suckers. The book consists of two parts:Part I reveals about who are these “Bad guys” and how to spot them. These “Bad guys” have" core traits, characteristics, strategies and styles" that uses to bully, use, manipulate “Good guys” in marriages, at work places, and even at churches. They are everywhere. Most importantly this part helps you identifying the people with “Evil Eight” characteristic or the “BAITERS” (B-Backstabbers, A-Abusers, I-Imposters, T-Talkers, E-Exploiters, and R-Reckless). Again, the all content is extremely useful and truly an eye opener.Part II addresses issues of "Stop Being a Target and become a Victim, most importantly “Your New “Life Code” and Rules for Winning in the Real World. The last topic of the Part II tackles a topic on “Parenting in the Real World.”“Parenting in the Real World” section can itself be a great book. I believe how individual is raised has great impacts on his/her future life ups and downs. This section provides information on “Not Crippling Your Own Children”, “How World Really Works” and “Raise Adults”. Based on my own experiences, most of the damages, as who I am today, are done when I was young. My family had instilled in me good old Buddhist/Christian values such as being humble, compassionate, giving and sacrificing, dedicating yourself to the welfare of all others, karma, forgiving and loving your enemies, be always apologetic if you done wrong and on and on. In addition, as a young person, I intensely studied and followed what says in Dale Carnegie books (How to Stop Worrying and Start Living and How to win Friends and Influence People) which told me nothing about the malicious “BAITERS” and beneficial "LIFE CODES” of the real world. Of course these books were written for a long time ago, when people had decent values, and moreover honest hard working people are recognized and appreciated. Finally, I truly believe that Dr. Phil shows that he is an extremely generous person at heart, just by writing this book. Contents of this book may be somewhat verbose and repetitive at times or it has poor editing works etc. yet his messages about the harsh reality is in it. He did convey his messages! Sure there were many self improvement and development books such as “In Sheep’s Clothing” and “Too Nice for Your Own Good”. But I love this book, because it is very simple to read and follow. The only drawback is this book has NO INDEX! I pre-ordered this book and have a hard cover version, no e-version. Given the usefulness of material, and the fact the book should be used as references and learning tools for one’s ongoing self-improvements, it has no index is regrettable! Perhaps it is rushed to print out… All in all, an excellent book! If you gone through similar life experiences of what I went through and what I am still enduing, you will know how useful and true is everything in this book. People who was used, abused, manipulated and their hope and dreams are crushed by the BAITERS will learn something from this book! People who have BAITERS traits will give a 1 STAR for this book and find nothing useful. Thank you very much, Dr. Phil !Lastly, I am a non-native speaker who is trying to improve my English day by day, if you see any typos or grammar errors, anything annoying, verbose or obscure, it is an Amazon review, not an academic paper, please understand. Hopefully the above review conveyed my two-cents on “Life Code” by Dr. Phil McGraw.

Surprisingly informative...well thought out and a must for yourself and your children...young and old in today's world. I'm not a big fan of self-help books, and I wouldn't categorize Life Code as one of those books. It's just full of insight, experience, and helpful advice about those that surround us everyday.

This review is for the quality of the actual physical book, not the subject... the pages are litterally out of order and missing. Pages 28-76 are missing. Then after pages 77-124 it starts over at page 78.

I love Dr. Phil and Robin. I wish I'd read this book when it first came out, but as the saying goes, " better late than never". I have been saying that the ways certain people operate has been different over the past 15-20 years, but I couldn't quite pin point what was going on. Dr. Phil has helped me make sense of so much and I am so grateful. I trust Dr. Phil because he seems to "practice what he preaches". I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to live a value based life in the midst of a culture that seems to have lost its moral compass.

Drags for miles... was he paid by the word? I am a huge fan of Dr. Phil, but this book is painful to read. The audio book... painful to listen to. If you have ever heard an infomercial that spends 30 minutes talking about what it is going to tell you, then you will understand what I'm saying here. The book could be summed up in a few pages, with I will say, great material. The rest is ridiculously long winded, blow hard filler.Dr. Phil. Great message. Horrible delivery.

Wow.Terrific book.Great summaries about the "problem" people you are likely to encounter - how to spot them, how to not become fodder for this mill.I was putting so much highlighting at the "Ah Ha!' moments that the whole section was becoming highlighted. That's how good it is.And totally TOTALLY on target about what it takes to succeed - or at least not get totally stampeded - in the workplace. For years I couldn't figure out why I ended up being the one at work who "did all of work but got none of the credit" - read tons of books and tried everything,Now, thanks to Phil McGraw, I see exactly what I have been doing completely wrong, and I am determined to fix it.Not a parent so I admit to kind of glossing over that section but what I read seemed spot on too.If you want to hear about how everything in your life is someone else's fault and have someone to feel bad for you while you explain why things can't change, then you won't enjoy this book. But if you want the Real Skinny from someone who knows how to get to the point, and you want to make meaningful changes to your life, then YES, get this book, read it thoroughly, DO the checklists and get cracking.

From the Inside Flap

The Internet revolution has come. Some say it has gone. In The Future of Ideas, Lawrence Lessig explains how the revolution has produced a counterrevolution of potentially devastating power and effect. Creativity once flourished because the Net protected a commons on which widest range of innovators could experiment. But now, manipulating the law for their own purposes, corporations have established themselves as virtual gatekeepers of the Net while Congress, in the pockets of media magnates, has rewritten copyright and patent laws to stifle creativity and progress. Lessig weaves the history of technology and its relevant laws to make a lucid and accessible case to protect the sanctity of intellectual freedom. He shows how the door to a future of ideas is being shut just as technology is creating extraordinary possibilities that have implications for all of us. Vital, eloquent, judicious and forthright, The Future of Ideas" is a call to arms that we can ill afford to ignore.

Lessig's work is very important in understanding the turbulence of our current global economy and the opportunities and threats rapid technological development poses to our future... the notion of the "industrial commons" is an important contribution to the emerging science of innovation economics. Private industry needs to understand such thinking better in order to focus on what matters in planning, R&D and applied research. Lessig refrains from making sociological conclusions, but it's obvious our political system is and will be challenged by changes that are not controllable.A Foresight theory would be a logical next step for Lessig to posit a theory of foresight management that can help society cope with the inevitable.

Lawrence Lessig has, rightly, achieved hero status amongst netizens for his early, analytical and compelling advocacy of the need for wise regulation by law - and other sorts of code - of that thing William Gibson termed cyberspace.Lessig's magnum opus is Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace - remixed not long ago into Code: Version 2.0 - the second "version" edited communally by wiki thereby demonstrating, as you would expect from a tribal elder, the man has the courage of his convictions. Lessig's renown has accordingly spread: he is a sought after public speaker (and a compelling one - Lessig is a genius with a PowerPoint presentation) and, rumour has it, a long-time consiglieri of President Obama who in recent times has been linked with the job of running the Federal Communications Commission. Boy would *that* frighten the Confederate horses. As a prolific generator of intellectual property himself, much of which is available through open source copyright licences, Lessig is in the unusual position, a bit like a stand-up comedian from an ethnic minority, of being able to score hits that others cannot without being written off as a liberal/hacker/stoner hand waver (though it isn't to say that this doesn't routinely happen - a quick trot through the one star reviews on this site ought to persuade you of that). The thing is, his analysis isn't half as glib as his conservative detractors say it is (or their criticisms are!) Lessig is a brilliant and compelling thinker. Code, in my book, is one of the few essential pieces of 21st century political philosophy to have yet emerged. The Future of Ideas was published in 2001 as a follow up to the original Code, and while its arguments are for the main part compelling, they are also familiar, springing as they do from exactly the turf as those in Code: principally the virtue of the end-to-end architecture of the internet and the possibility for a myriad of unimagined innovations and unprecedented technological developments. Lessig spends more time updating the Garrett Hardin's tragedy of the commons - on which premise modern legal philosophy underlying physical property can be understood - to the non-rivalrous (if you'll excuse the expression: at times Lessig's way with words deserts him) digital commons, and this is an interesting and valuable discussion.Other than these arguments, much of the heft in this book was also the meat and potatoes of Code, and it didn't feel as if substantial new ground was being broken here, and where it was - for example Lessig's playful reference to the "Sovietisation" of dominant positions in the market - such interesting and fair observations were let down by their expression. To compare corporate titans with communists will infuriate exactly the conservative readers Lessig ought to be doing more to appeal to.This book, and the author's outlook generally, aren't without their flaws. Lessig is an idealist in at least two pejorative senses: First, in that he believes that fixing the endemic problems he excellently articulates is a matter of straightforward legal or technological regulation, whereas he has (equally excellently) articulated that the first order problems are themselves not of a legal or technological nature. They are with the meatware, and in particular its peculiar sociological constitution. The same "Sovietisation" that cankers corporate titans also ossifies regulators, and for the same ineluctable evolutionary reasons.Complexity is inevitable in our social systems precisely because (like the internet and successful corporations) they have evolved from institutions and customs designed to solve earlier, different and often unrelated problems. Lessig is extremely convincing on this. But there's the rub: the fix for these historical circumstances came pre-bundled with commercial and political hierarchies the priorities of which have hardened, for predictable but selfish reasons, in ways which, as Lessig now patiently catalogues, create problems of a different nature altogether. But nor are these hierarchies all for the worse, and they have the benefit of inertia, we all have an innate (no doubt evolved!) resistance to the idea of abandoning established (read evolved) political structures when they still appear to be functioning, however sub-optimally - especially since those in the upper reaches of the political structures who are best placed to change them are also, almost by definition, least incentivised to do so.Overcoming these facts of life presents social as well as political issues: it is not simply a matter of passing the law: one needs to build the consensus to pass the law. The old paradigm not only needs to be in crisis, it needs to be *believed to be* in crisis - believed by the very people from whose perspective it is least obviously in crisis. This is where the conservatives cheap shots, which Lessig laughs off, do hit home: preaching to the choir (which squarely includes me, by the way) won't help: the sermon needs to go over with the sceptics in the posh seats. This does seem to be starting to happen where it really matters - commercial and technological development. Personally I'm less exercised than Lessig is about the mendacity of the Recording Industry Association of America since, well, it *is* only rock `n' roll, however much we might like it.Secondly, Lessig overstates his case. To win over this congregation of Hollywood moguls and record company execs - a tough crowd - he needs to avoid overreaching. His analysis of the internet's architecture is comprehensive and detailed (herein you will learn more than you bargained for about the packet-switching design of the code layer of the internet) but he is not persuasive that this whole edifice, spanning as it does not just real space, public and private property and also international regulatory space really could be, in its entirety, laid low by regulatory action, much less privately or corporately controlled systems design. These days not even Ma Bell has anything like monopoly power, and technological advances (wifi, internet through electricity circuits) ever more militate against it ever happening again. That is to say, I think Lessig is crying wolf.Since there will always be (virtual) areas of the net which are differently or less heavily regulated or, to use his awful expression, "architected" (Professor Lessig, if you're reading: the word is "designed") and the commercial energy required to rein in defectors will always be greater than that required to ease constrained systems to keep up with the competition, and, absent real-life Sovietisation (these days not quite as ludicrous a prospect as it would have been in 2001!), market share will always go with gravity - downward, to the service provider who places the least constraints on its subscribers. This, I think, is borne out by the history of the net in the eight or so years since this book was written. The original Napster may have gone the way of all flesh, but the collaborative internet is in rude health, as ADSL has become mainstream the opportunities for innovation and creation seem as present as they ever were.Another well established end-to-end network - a city - provides an enlightening metaphor: trains or buses might be privately controlled, the use of cars somewhat (but imperfectly) regulated and (as in any network) there will be places we cannot go at all, but we can always, at the limit, walk. The first lesson of evolutionary theory is: Where there's a will, there's a way.A week is a long time in technology, and eight years is an aeon: The Future Of Ideas is necessarily dated nowadays, and since the revision to Code, has little to offer that can't be found in that somewhat weightier book.Olly Buxton

The author of this great new book about ideas in the age of technology is no college kid touting, "I have a right to, like, copy MP3s!" On the contrary, Law Professor Lawrence Lessig's book provides a balanced, logical, and realistic argument for more careful Copywright and Intellectual Property legislation. In fewer than 300 pages, Lessig not only lays out the history of IP law, but also thoroughly examines the current move towards corporate favoritism. This makes for a very discouraging read; however, the reader is left with plenty of ideas about how IP law could be shaped in the future. Lessig's suggestions would go a long way towards protecting innovation while still upholding the core principles of fair use and reasonable limits the Founding Fathers wrote into the US Constitution. (Buy a copy of this book for your Congressman!)Lessig, a Liberal who clerked for the popular Conservative Circuit Court Judge and prolific public intellectual Richard Posner, also demonstrates why this issue cuts right across standard ideological lines. Even if you only read chapters 4 and 11, I highly reccomend this book for a thorough examination of this most pressing issue of current public policy.

The Rosie Result (Don Tillman Series), by Graeme Simsion

Review

“Simsion is, as ever, funny without unfairly poking fun, and deeply empathetic toward the flaws and weirdness that everyone carries inside. Charming, eloquent, and insightful, The Rosie Result is a triumphant conclusion to Don’s story, one that celebrates this remarkable father, husband, and friend in all his complexity and brilliance.”―Booklist [starred]"Don’s voice is particular―his intelligence extraordinary―and he is oblivious of how funny he is. His relationships with others are unique and excellently written…Although The Rosie Result centers on Hudson and Don, each character in it transforms in their own way… Simsion’s novel depicts autism in such unremarkable ways that its story becomes remarkable in the telling."―Foreword Reviews“[V]ery much a charmer... with everything coming to a proper close. A fitting end to this delightful trilogy that doesn't pull punches.”―Kirkus“Simsion hits just the right balance between serious literary exploration of social issues and the delightfully humorous (mis)adventures of an unusual but good-intentioned modern family."―New York Journal of Books

The first big plus was that I didn’t spend the entire book wanting Rosie to...well...die. I found her insufferable in the first two books. The author managed to hit a nice stride with her character and put her where she belongs...as a SUPPORTING supporting character. I would’ve given this five stars but the first third of the book was so slow! There were also so many characters and plots that, while tied up in the end, were a bit confusing. And I came into the book having read the first two! Not to mention that Don wasn’t allowed to shine as much as I’d hoped. Otherwise, Don’s escapades-especially with the animals mating idea-had me laughing such I feared giving myself a hernia! Seriously. I laughed until I cried. I hope we’re not done with Don and the fam!!!

Don, is a scientist with Aspergers and his relationship with Rosie is just wonderful. Especially considering where Don started out from, and all the hurdles he had to overcome. Seeing him now with his child, and still going strong with Rosie after 13 years made me love him even more. Personally, I love it when kids are part of a story. Even better if the kid is like Hudson, a mini Don, with all his complexities.I’m not going to lie, I have a weakness for quirky characters. And often that comes when characters who struggle with every day occurrences, social niceties, and an overall way of thinking differently in a world that isn’t very forgiving or tolerant. The Rosie Result is all about Don trying to make Hudson’s life at school easier. The way he goes about is heart warming and so “Don”. Hudson, with eleven years has a mind of his own, and a very strong personality. And I loved how the author took the offerings and advice of a village to resolve it all.Don’s problem solving as always made me grin and chuckle. He still struggles with some aspects but he has Rosie to guide him when unsure. I truly love their relationship. The outspokenness, openness, and honesty between them works wonders. Also incredibly fascinating was the interaction between school and parents, all the small dramas and school politics, especially in regards to Autism. It was a bit eye-opening too if I’m honest. But I loved how united Don and Rosie were in all things Hudson. I could talk for hours about the way Don and Rosie made me smile whenever they played good cop and bad cop – at least their version of it.I believe this might even be the BEST book in this series. That’s actually pretty amazing – it’s rare that sequels surpass the first novel. But for me it’s all about the kids – they make books even better and actually bring out the best in many characters.

My favorite of the Rosie books, and I loved The Rosie Project. This book was funny - some times laugh out loud funny, sometimes eye-rolling funny. It was also imbued with taut writing and warmth, charm, and love. It’s thought provoking discussion of autism was engaging without being heavy or preachy and delivered with care and grace. Only vegans and anti-vaxxers need be worried - on many fronts. Well done. Now I guess we need to wait for the movie. Jennifer Lawrence was all wrong for Rosie. How about Alia Shawkat?

These books are just happiness for the soul - the third book being every bit as enjoyable as the other two. I am RARELY one to read trilogies, losing interest as I go. The way Mr. Simsion writes in Don’s voice, the clever way the reader knows things that Don does not see, the nuttiness of the characters that surround him - it’s a formula the author pulls off perfectly. And I could not wait to read it. What an enjoyable ride.

An absolutely fascinating and insightful trilogy into the much disputed field of the autism spectrum. As evidenced in this last book, it seems that early intervention (and a father who had experienced the same difficulties) gave the boy a great advantage in learning social skills and yet accepting who he was as a person. The mother provided a wonderful support and back-up to both males with her own intelligence and skills in dealing with their deficiencies. My only criticism is that there was some confusion as to autism's relationship (if any) to Asperger's syndrome, which displays similar symptoms. High intelligence seems to be a feature of both conditions (inevitably in the maths/science field) and perhaps more prevalent in boys than girls? As is ADHD. Future scientists may discover why.

I have read the trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed it.I think we can all identify to larger and lesser degrees with many of the aspects and challenges that “autistic” people face.I found it very well balanced with discussions and thoughts throughout as to the many issues and layers there are to autism and pros and cons of labeling people. It’s not that straightforward! These books will stay with me for a very long time.

This was a really good sequel addressing the natural result of Don trying to raise a son and coming full circle in coming to terms with his childhood struggles and appreciating his father. Here, Rosie is no longer the focus and becomes a supporting character, which is a good thing. Don and Rosie's son Hudson is the object of focus and Don is still the protagonist which is how it should be since being in Don's head is always the most entertaining and moving aspect.

Fantastic finish to the series. I appreciate how the author made all of the characters dynamic. This book isn't just useful for understanding neurodiversity, it is great for showing growth of all characters and not relying on bad/good guy tropes. The book is more realistic because of this.I'm sad it is billed as an ending to the series as I would live to see Don tackle being a grandparent!

I'm a fast reader but this 153 page novel took me as long as a 500 page book. It is so intricately written. There were words I was looking up on every page, yet it was not pretentious in the least. Never was there a time when I could predict what would happen next. Then end was a little abrupt and you are left feeling a bit unsatisfied but upon reflection, I think that's by design.NOTE: I also got the audio version of this book and it is HORRIBLE. One person described it as just a reading, not an acting out. There was no inflection or change of voice among characters. It is virtually "unlistenable."

Long ago I saw the old film based on this novel, and just finished reading it. The story did not disappoint, and is very well-written. Although I pretty much knew the plot and the ending since the film is largely faithful to the book, I still really enjoyed reading it.Central to the story is the existence of a mysterious valley in the Himalayas that is largely unknown to mankind. Here in the 21st century, feeling that we live in a world so small, seemingly completely known and mapped by satellite, this may seem not only quaint but difficult to use as a main theme for a story. Nevertheless, I found it very easy to slip right into the narrative and suspend disbelief. The story line is refreshingly linear and easy to follow. One thing I liked about the book that I did not quite get out of the movie was the way in some of the characters and their thought processes are described. In particular, the inner mind and personality of Hugh Conway is much better revealed than it could be in any film version. It also gives the more thoughtful reader a few things to contemplate regarding the nature of life and time.

This book is worth pushing through the stilted prose. The themes that the novel explores are universal. What is the purpose of life? What is love? Is longer life worthwhile? So many questions that don't necessarily get answered but allows the reader to start exploring these ideas. The last part of the novel is surprising. Glad that I read this one.

English writer James Hilton wrote several good novels, but the best of them may be "Lost Horizon", a fantastical story about four Westerners, kidnapped from an airstrip in India, only to crash-land in Tibet. They find shelter at the mysterious monastery of Shangri-La. The four westerners receive the hospitality of the Lamas, but there is a larger game afoot, one revealed to the British diplomat Conway, the senior member of the party. The story he is told is incredible, and yet, it might be true. And if it is true, it changes everything..."Lost Horizon" is a quick but delightful read, and a page-turner. Hilton's quickly-sketched characters come to life, even as the author builds the suspense. The story is not told in chronological order, and the reader is left to draw his own conclusions about what really happened in a hidden valley, somewhere in Tibet. Highly recommended.

A classic that I somehow had missed. It seems like a simple plot on the surface- a small group of people with little in common kidnapped and brought to strange, remote place and told they may not be able to leave. Through the disparate sensibilities and worldviews of those involved, however, the book pushes hard on themes of loneliness, ambition, greed, and purpose in life- to name only a few. The more I think about the characters and how they experience Shangri-La, the more you realize just how complex a work this is. A very fast read once you get into the narrative portion of the book.

This utopian adventure novel, first published in 1933, is the first time Shangri-La appears in any story. I was shocked to learn that it wasn’t an ancient myth, but a creation of an English author who also wrote Goodbye Mr. Chips, during the period between the two world wars. After reading Lost Horizon I can see why. Shangri-La is not only a utopian sanctuary, but a place where the trappings of the Old World, Europe before World War I, are preserved and mix with the exotic cultures of the East. Where the ravages of time can be slowed and peace can reign. The story itself is like something from a dream, intriguing and yet a bit hazy. And odd but refreshing read.

This is such a great book it is one of my absolute favorite books. It was the first book I ordered when I received my candle. I also ordered the audible selection so that I could listen listen to it when I don't have the ability to sit and read a book. It is also one of my favorite movies. As they say the book is always better than the movie and in this case the book and the movie are equal partners. I have read this book several times and thoroughly enjoy the storyline. If you ever dream of finding a utopia where time does not matter this is a book for you. It haseverything you need for a good story, adventure, suspense, love, fantasy and very thought-provoking. Several of James Hilton's books have been made into movies and to me that is a great sign of an awesome book. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves to read.

There is nothing "special" about this edition. In fact, it is extremely cheaply produced. The story is, I suppose, the original text, but I feel I was tricked into buying this because it called itself "Special Edition." The photo on the front is so pixelated that you can't tell what it is; the table of contents, which is oddly combined with the title page, is the very first inner page; the text that would normally be in italic is all in upper case; and on the last page, in tiny type, is printed "Made in the USA, Middletown, DE, 21 June 2018" which was roughly when I ordered the book. It did take about a week to arrive after I'd ordered it. I guess they are printing these as they're ordered? Regardless, I would definitely recommend buying one of the other editions by a recognized publisher. As a person who loves books, I feel stupid for buying this!
