I had to buy this book for a class I took last year and had no idea of what to expect...I started reading this, and could not put it down! Frankly, I don't think that's something to scoff at, considering it is a 300 page 13th century poem! Usually, when reading something that old, one finds that the translator has insisted on maintaining the rhyme or form of the original, which is honestly quite exasperating for the modern reader. This one, while mainting the visual appearance of the poem with the mid-line and end-line breaks, reads exactly as prose and is so much more comfortable to work with!I ended up reading through three books of translation theory written by Burton Raffel in an effort to analze and critique this book for a second class I was taking (one on translation), and really wish I could type up some of the points I came across in my research. Suffice it to say, I truly believe this is one of the best English translations of the Nibelungenlied there is (and I have read through a fair number of them), particularly when considering the modern reader.There may be complaints by those who feel that the poem should be maintained with its "original" rhyme and form, and if that's truly what you are looking for, there are plenty of other translations out there that deliver this. Raffel's deviates only in that aspect, and is otherwise quite perfect at retaining the mood and content of the original written poem, and does so in a way that the modern reader can appreciate and comprehend.This is a piece of literature taken from an era of history that we can never really grasp, since it is so different from ours, and yet I think the heart of the story remains extraordinarily clear and accessible for anyone today. I really cannot recommend this book enough.

This is an excellent book. The prose verse translated in English was a delight to read in particular since I study both languages.

This may well be a wonderful translation. I love Raffel's Beowulf and am currently reading his version of Canterbury Tales. But I won't be reading this book on my Kindle. Instead, I just went to a local bookstore and bought a paper copy.Why?Simple! All the introductory portions of the book are fine--standard Kindle formatting, etc. But the poem appears to be in some unreadable fixed format font. Most every set of four lines is in a different font size, varying from about the smallest standard Kindle font to something much smaller. Yes, much smaller than the smallest Kindle font. It is bad enough jolting the eye/brain combination with a font size change every four lines. But the largest of the changing fonts needs a magnifying glass.Change the font size, you say. Well, I tried. But it changed the font size of the introduction, the foreword, etc. It didn't affect the poem in the least.So I will read this in paper form. And won't be able to have it for reference on my Kindle. Oh well. Sometimes technology ain't all it's cracked up to be.Additional information: I bought the paper version. I am well over half way through. The paper version lives up to my expectations. This is a very good translation. Very readable. Easy to understand. Raffel creates poetry that sounds good to read to yourself. I have an electronic version (a different translator) which includes rhymes for all the lines and results in a much more stilted presentation. This is definitely better. So, I recommend the book, just not on the Kindle.

Great daily review. I used them all last year for morning work. They are only half of a sheet of paper for each day and 5 questions each day. They don't take a lot of time (if you were looking for more filler). They go along with 1st grade standards well. I did not use the progress charts at the end of each week (children mark how many they got right for each day on a graph).

If your kids are naturally strong in language skills, this is probably a great review for them. My kids are not. They love math and science, but language... no. I started them out with these Daily Language Review books, and that was a mistake. These books don't actually teach any one skill. Each day has a few different activities: spelling, punctuation, grammar, whatever, with just a few questions of each. So for a kid who has strong language skills, this would be great, not too much boring repetition. My kids, however, need each skill thoroughly outlined and instructed and practiced. This book was frustrating and mind-boggling to them.

This book is organized by day of the week (M-F) for each lesson. The lessons progress nicely at a very good pace, just a bit ahead of my daughter's 1st grade curriculum. It serves as both a review and daily practice for her. The lessons are also self-explanatory so my daughter can do the lesson all by herself and have me check it. At the end of each lesson is a progress table to show how many (problems) the child has done correctly. Overall a very well organized and fun book. I highly recommend it.

Daily Language Review by Evan Moor Publishers is my favorite quick overview of grammar, spelling, etc.... for our homeschool. You can choose the level that is right for your child and it only takes them about 5-10 minutes a day. It helps them retain all the basics, while their regular Language Arts Curriculum teaches new concepts.

We really love all the daily review books- they offer a fun variety of skills, without being boring, but offering the repetition it takes to for a skill to stick. I especially love using these books with my kids with a shorter attention span.

My friends in teaching have a daily language activity and daily math activity for their students to complete during the homeroom period. This is great for this type of activity. It is also great for supplementing your child's instruction and for tutoring.

I bought this for my son last summer when he was starting in K. We don't do it everyday, when we do remember to do it, he can sit and finish 1 week at a time. The questions are easy for him to understand and complete on his own (although he's naturally good at language skills). It's a good review of what he already knows and introduces new concepts (like sentence combining) in a gradual pace. It is writing/reading intensive with little pictures on each page, parent assistance is needed for those who is still learning to read and write, but can also be completed independently. There is a chart at the end of each week to keep score of how much questions were answered correctly.Today when I pulled the book out, he said 'YAY! English is FUN! I LOVE doing English!' (p.s. he is immersed in Chinese environment) I will definitely recommend this book and plan to continue to use this series when he finishes this book.

It took a while for the book to get to me in California, but it was well worth the wait. In the meantime, I listened to Dr. Rupy’s six episode podcast 2 or 3 times. The enthusiasm and authenticity in his voice is refreshing in a health world that is increasingly harder to navigate. The guests were knowledgeable and Dr. Rupy asked the appropriate questions. Real science-based studies were used as evidence throughout. Each time I listened I learned something new and grew more excited for the book.I received the book last night I have already read the first 30 pages. The layout is amazing. The introduction is written like a magazine article, which I believe makes the abundance of information easier to digest. Is is intriguing and the writing is immaculate. No mistakes or boring redundant information. It is obvious that Dr. Rupy spent a vast amount of time pulling together relevant research. The enthusiasm I heard in his podcast can also be felt in the writing, which is inspirational. The content is broken down beautifully and is easy to follow. My hope for this book is that doctors all over the world read it and adopt Rupy’s approach. Western medicine is amazing but food is medicine and nutrition is the foundation of health. The two should be used as one to help shape better health systems all over the world. I am so glad that Dr. Rupy dedicated his time, energy and love into this project. I cannot wait to finish reading the intro and to get started with the recipes. This will be a life changer for me.

Loved the information in this book, it was damaged in an electrical fire 2 weeks after buying it which was really sad but I loved reading what I was able to. Very informative!

This is a wonderful book, the recipes I've tried are great, and I love the Doctor's commonsense approach to diet and health.

Absolutely love this book. Not only are the recipes amazing, but it totally taught me my own way of using ingredients that I use often, but not in a way that was nearly as delicious and healthy. It’s a recipe book but it’s also an incredible influence for creativity! Very much recommended.

Have made several recipes and enjoy his comments and personal history. Photos are good and as the final product appears.

Sorry, big waste of money. 100 everyday recipes??? Haven't even heard of half the ingredients. Didn't see one recipe I would even try.

I thought this was for the most part a very insightful and thought-provoking book, and it struck me as being an accurate portrayal of current reality. I didn’t see any practical solutions being offered, but that didn’t really seem to be the goal or purpose of the book (and probably would take another book altogether to accomplish). One thing that was brought up throughout the book particularly pestered me during and after reading it - the idea that if women were taught to value our bodies for what they could do instead of what they looked like, we would love our bodies more. Well, what if our bodies can’t do very much? Sure, if we’re alive, our bodies are doing *something*. But that is not going to help too many women to appreciate their bodies very much - “your body is at least keeping you alive for the moment!” is simply not very inspirational.For the "average" girl or woman, switching their focus to what their body is able to do instead of their physical appearance probably does do wonders for their happiness, confidence, etc. But let’s stop for a second right there. The “average girl or woman” part. How about those of us who are already thinking - a LOT - about what our bodies are able to do, and therefore what our bodies AREN’T able to do, and that feeds quite a bit into our views of ourselves? Perhaps as we’ve gotten older, our bodies can’t move like they used to, can’t get us from place to place, and hurt. Can’t hear the things they used to hear, get sick easier, know that our bodies are closer and closer to finally giving out on us? What about those of us who were born without sight, without hearing? What about those of us who were born with heart defects, genetic abnormalities, various diseases that we deal with everyday? So that we have to fight to be able to do the things that the “average girl or woman” doesn’t even think about, if we can even do it at all, ever? This list goes on and on.This book completely ignores and glosses over this reality, doesn't touch on it at all. If it at least acknowledges it and attempted to offer some solutions (or even other resources) for how to have a better image of your body when it ISN'T capable of a lot of things, that would have been much better. (My body scares me, if I allow myself to think about it. It is a threat to my life thanks to chronic illness. I'm not really in love with what my body can do, or what it can't do.)

Great book. Engeln does a good job of explaining her points and using detailed descriptions of her studies/research to back up her claims. This is a topic that needs to be addressed for all of the young women of the world, and I believe she does a good job of getting the conversation started. She gives you a new way of looking at seemingly innocent comments on appearance that we all make to the women in our lives and she starkly highlights the damage the the obsession with looks and beauty really does on young girls and women. She describes how it truly is a double standard that women are valued so highly for looks, while men are valued for ability, bravery, etc. Society is starting to shift, but still has a long way to go when we still have employers requiring females to wear things like make up and high heels as part of a "uniform" to work. I liked that she used anecdotal stories along with her qualitative research studies to driver her point home. I truly felt for the women in her book who all underwent various degrees of stress and life dissatisfaction due to these issues (even the ones who WERE beautiful by cultural standards.) Well written and an easy read. She is not an over the top feminist by any means, so if you are slightly conservative this book will still teach you a lot about society and gender roles.

I am not done with this book yet, but I can't put it down. It is so relevant and current! I am going to go through it chapter by chapter with both of my daughters! One is 15, and things are getting out of hand with worry about her face, and body. I see her going through what I still go through.. this book holds a mirror up to women who are struggling with body image/self esteem, and self worth based on their looks, even as we try to reject that, and know its wrong to do so. A wonderful eye opener, to how we view ourselves, and others, even if we don't realize it!

Every woman or anyone raising a girl should read this book. Since I've read the book I've been remembering so many instances when concern about my appearance overshadowed more important ideas. When my parochial school forbade girls from wearing pants so we weren't allowed to hang on the monkey bars or slide down the sledding hill for fear we'd show our underwear and be "unladylike". Or when I hesitated to apply for a corporate job for fear I wouldn't be able to "dress corporate" enough. The impossible standards stare us in the face on every red carpet, on magazine covers and in anchorwoman chairs on the nightly news. Imagine what we'd attain if we didn't spend all that money and energy attempting to be something different. Dr. Englen's exploration of the topic and true stories make this a very readable book, even an enjoyable one as she provides hope and ideas for doing things differently.

This is such an important issue that every single person should be exposed to! Dr. Engeln writes in such a compellig and accessible way that I could not stop reading it. As a young women I've felt overwhelmed by the ways our society focuses on and over-values appearance and beauty, but reading this book provided me with realistic actions that I can take in my own personal life to help combat this issue. Furthermore, I was surprised by how deep this issue runs in our society in ways I didn't even realize, and I've now caught myself paying closer attention to how certain messages regarding beauty pervade in my life.

This book is a must read. I see everything Dr. Engeln is discussing EVERYWHERE. If you are a woman you should read this, if you are a man you should read this, if you have a daughter, a son, if you teach, if you have contact with other humans, you should read this book. It is very well written, a pleasure to read, and profoundly eye-opening.

We have been coming to the lovely island of Kauai for over thirty years, involving more than 80 visits to the current time. Twenty-two years ago we bought a second home on its fabulous North Shore. The "Kauai Underground Guide" has been our constant companion for most of these years, and remains our absolute favorite travel book advising island visitors. Our library contains copies of most of the 19 separate editions that have been published, each better than its predecessors. Their opinions of communities, accommodations, restaurants, beaches, attractions are so spot-on and valuable. We are also humbled by their early decision to warn visitors of some popular tourist sights that carry with them risk of personal harm. A large portion of the sale of each book goes to Kauai charities, including that for abused and needy children - a very noble act.

I purchased a number of books before going to Kauai. There are only 2 that I can highly recommend of them all. This is one. Kauai Revealed is the other. Both, in the end, are probably required to really plan and enjoy a trip on your own.What Lenore's book gives you is a personal, up-front view of where to eat, great beaches to explore, and other things to do that are in the realm of the day-to-day things you will just do. Eat. Walk on the beach. Swim. Shop. Also, this book is a lot more family oriented than Revealed, so if you have children, there's a ton of great family focus here. I don't have kids, so obviously it is great either way. Maybe your're going to Kauai to have a great Na Pali cruise or some other vacation-oriented activity. Revealed has probably more focus on those kinds of things, although this book gave a great perspective in those areas, too. But those major activities I planned before the trip, made decisions on which companies to hire, and made reservations before we left. When we were there, and needed advice on what to do to fill in the rest of the time (which is most of the time if you're there more than a couple of days (8 for us)), Kauai Underground Guide was more helpful and is the book we made sure was with us everywhere we went when we were on Kauai. I absolutely wouldn't travel to Kauai without the most recent edition of Lenore's book. You won't be disappointed.

One of two guides that we used. While this one was helpful for planning, it was not as useful after we arrived. Kauai is really divided into distinct geographical areas but the book is organized around activities, not geography. If you are in the north and planning your day, using the book involves a lot page turning because information about the north is spread through out the book. The same for the east, south and west. To be fair other Kauai guides are also similarly organized.The information was generally accurate but somewhat selective or thin in places. Some useful opinions were expressed but most of the information was rather generic. We didn't listen to the music CD.Would we buy this guide again? Yes, but if we were limited to a single guide, this guide would be nosed out by The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed by Andrew Doughty which seemed to offer more opinions based on personal experience and was the book most often referred to by groups we met in Kauai. Neither is perfect.

We have purchased every updated edition of this book for over 30 visits to Kauai.It is still among the best, however printed guides are becoming obsolete now that so much information is available on the Internet.This is especially true for restaurant recommendations. Current reviews from other customers are available from a large number of sources, while this print review is old news.

If you purchase this book to find information about things to do or places to go in Kauai then be prepared to use it as a source to find information somewhere else. My impression is that it is a compilation of other sources of information. It is a helpful book but I was disappointed. I'm thankful that my wife usually does most of the research on places we travel to. She found the book useful and said she would give it 4 stars.
