About the Author

James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. I have 4 students using the Bastien series, and they're thriving. Well thought out, clear, and easy for these students to work with.

As a piano teacher, these are my favorite series to teach from. They are written well and the songs are not monotonous like some other series are. I feel like the kids who study bastien are better sight readers.

This is a great addition to our music education.

I love music, but I'm not a big classical music fan, and I don't play the piano. But I've really, really enjoyed this book. The gist of the story is that Mr. Rusbridger has a year to learn one of Chopin's most difficult piano pieces, the Ballade No. 1. He only gets to practice for perhaps a half hour a day. How does he do it? He gets a teacher, of course. But he also talks to many, many pianists, including some of the world's top pianists. He also talks to a few neuroscientists to figure out how, for instance, any person can possibly memorize a piece like Chopin's Ballade No. 1. At the same time, I should mention, Rusbridger is editor of the Guardian newspaper--so he's running a newspaper at the same time he's trying to figure out how to play this difficult piece. The lessons that Mr. Rusbridger learns about piano are not limited to the piano, of course, and that's what makes it doubly interesting: any new skill requires similar dedication, and yes, practice does make perfect.

Recommended to me by a teacher at piano camp Sonata when I expressed that my next piece is Chopin Gm Ballade which I gave up completing 15 yrs ago.This book expressed exactly Same issues and same feelings. I loved it from the first page . . . Gave me hope to persue again. Since I started working on the piece, I am able to play whole piece as a rough draft within a month. I didn't think I was capable at late 50s of age to play it again.I look forward to finish the book and finalize the piece so I can perform for my Audience.Wonderful book. Thank you for the inspiration !

This book is a great narrative of what an amateur pianist can achieve if he or she is decided to. I really enjoyed reading it. What calls my attention is how Mr. Rusbridger got to know all kind of experts about the Ballade. Somehow he was surrounded by pianists, musicians and professionals. Me as an amateur pianist, barely know other pianist or musicians. Sad to say...anyway if you play the piano and you have put yourself different challenges, this book is a good reading. Recommended!

I have just finished reading Play it Again, after savoring its pages for more than a year now. I loved it so much, and did not want it to end. Alan Rusbridger has done a great service to the amateur pianist community by writing such a thorough account of his travails with Chopins ballads. His writing style is sublime, as one would expect of a distinguished newsman. The book is a thoroughly enjoyable read, but more than that, it is a wonderful up-to-date guide on all things that affect and concern the amateur pianist. Most enriching was his plan to meet and interview several accomplished pianists and then to share their candid thoughts with us. As I read, I felt like I too had been granted the priceless opportunity to converse with Barenboim, Ax, Perahia, Berezovsky and many others.I rank this book as one of 2 great reads for piano enthusiasts, the other being the 3 volume Liszt biography by Alan Walker.Bravo Mr Rusbridger! Bravo! Write it Again.

I am a musician/pianist and know the score of the Chopin Ballade in g minor. It was grand entertainment for me to read about all the pitfalls and successes Rusbridger had with learning the Ballade. I kept the score at my side while reading it, therefore I knew the exact measure he was talking about. I sympathized with him all the way. I also liked the various interviews he had with professional pianists, piano makers and scientists. Makes me want to go back to learn it again. It's incredibly beautiful. My only complaint is that he doesn't mention his family very much in relation to their part in his quest to learn the Ballade.

I loved this book. It inspired me to take up piano lessons again. His tales of practicing in the middle of an incredibly hectic schedule, shopping for a piano, playing on the weekends with colleagues, and interviewing major performers enriches the narrative.

Such a fun look in to the life of an editor at the Guardian in one of the craziest years he must have had WHILE he tried to learn a very difficult piano piece. This book purports to be about the journey of the amateur trying to do something on a professional level outside their level of expertise. It is so much more. A swift, engaging, and inspiring read. Though I am not learning Chopin's Ballade Op. 23 because of it, I am learning one of the scherzi!

We think it normal for people in high-powered jobs to go to the gym regularly, but a work out on a very difficult piano piece provides a more challenging counterpoint to a very busy job. Two tense tales splendidly interwoven. When did he find time to write a book as well?

This book popped up on a recently released list for me, and I ended up buying it on a whim. I don't have kids in this age range, but my nephew reads anything he can get his hands on, so I'm constantly looking out for books for him. He's really sensitive and impressionable though, so I usually get the kindle versions and read them myself before I get the paperbacks for him. And honestly, this story was just perfect. It was part mystery part thriller, with a good moral, and a sweet ending. Even I got chills in a couple of places, lol! No exaggeration. This was one of my favorites:"And that's when she noticed something strange...the total silence. The owls had stopped hooting. The night bugs weren't buzzing. The whole forest seemed to be holding its breath.And then Mel heard a twig snap. Leaves rustling. Deep, wheezing breaths.The hairs on Mel's arms stood straight up.She wasn't alone. Something was here.Something big."I actually didn't get my nephew this paperback. I think he's going to love the author enough I took a chance and ordered the first 3 books in this series!!! :)

"Not NEARLY as good as the last ones, Mom. It was TERRIBLE."He should know, he's read all of them.My take on it: Wolverines HAVE picked fights with Grizzlies. AND WON. Grandpa is full of it.Lauren Tarshis said, "She read at least twenty different books, watched videos and studied photographs and maps." I guess wolverines were in none of them.Also, they ARE bloodthirsty beasts. They eat whatever comes across their path, including people. Including those poor women this book is based on who were attacked WHILE SLEEPING. If THAT'S not bloodthirsty, she and I have ENTIRELY different takes on what that word means.I've not read the book, myself, but just these two inaccuracies make me wonder what else is incorrect....

Weeeeeeeel...... Let's just say it's not as good as the other books in the series. One thing I noticed was that Grandpa is wrong. Wolverines actually do win fights sometimes; and it says pacificy, in the book, that Lauren Tarshis researched all the information. Well, I guess she didn't read any books about Wolverines! Besides the bad information,this was a decent book. I like Lauren Tarshis.

For any who think these might be too scary - the series has helped my 10-year old conquerr some anxieties, especially about natural disasters. He has been reading these since he was eight.

My 10 year old loves these books! We started buying them when he was 8 or 9. Love how they mix a fiction Children's story with historical facts. My kiddo loves them and learns from them too. Fun to read!

Both my girls love all the I Survived books. And to be honest I like reading them too. They have great historic information and are exciting to read every chapter is a cliffhanger. I read them to my 8 year old and my ten-year-old loves to read them at bedtime. Will definitely buy more of these

Bought this for my son for Christmas. Then his sister (10 years old) bought it for him at a school book fair in October before I could give it to him. I can't win.

This was recommended to me by several priests as a commentary on the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). I am a deacon and do not preach very often so when I do, a good solid source of examples on what the texts are saying is essential. The contributing writers are exceptionaly gifted in homiletics so reading their thoughts helps open me up to various themes to write on. The cost may seem high but when you consider the amount of material provided for any given Sunday it is well worth the money. The other volumes will be added to my library as each liturgical season comes up.

This book does not replace the need to do diligent research and reading in preparation for preaching according to the lectionary. What it does offer is a number of perspectives on each of the readings for the day, each written by a different person and with a different objective. It provides sufficient coverage and perspective to kick-start the sermon writing process, and generates a number of strands of thought which can be explored in arriving at the sermon itself. What it perhaps lacks is rich metaphors and illustrations, and these could be a useful addition in a companion volume (in the meantime I'll continue to use William Barclays Daily Bible Study as a source as well).What I found particularly valuable was the way in which the journey of the year through lectionary was made visible, with connections to preceding and succeeding weeks.A valuable addition to the bookshelf.

Love these commentaries and kindle version shows well. Only problem is that the Year A,B,C and Volume number are near impossible to read on the cover view which makes finding which one you need quite the annoying task.

So far I have purchased the 3 availible editions for Year C of the revised common lectionary- without hesitation I strongly endorse this product.The 4 articles on each text are invaluable- I come away from each reading with multiple sermon ideas.This series offers real options to the weekly lectionary preacher (I am United Methodist),the articles are wonderfully written and comprehensive, but not overwhelming. I highly, highly recomend.The hardcover bindings seem to be built well- these are a resource you can keep and continue to use for years to come.

The book has invaluable insight for each Sunday--there is difficulty in how the information is organized so while I continue to purchase and build my collection I wish one could read the subtitles all at once on a page rather than having to read a column then turn the page for more. Usually thoughtful and insightful content

This series of books should be on all preachers and pastors bookshelf. Wonderful source for sermons and or classes. I highly recommend.

This is one of the best resources ever for ministers! I am buying the entire set and use them every single week as I prepare sermons. The four different views on each lectionary passage really open up the pericope and provide numerous angles from which to present a sermon. I am so grateful for this series!

This cookbook has the best fondue recipes ever, especially the non-alcoholic ones. Our cover wasn't the same as shown, but the interior contained the same favorite recipes that we've enjoyed since the 1970's!

Love this book... Had one back in the 70's.. lost in time... glad to find another

If you like fondue, then this is the book for you! It covers cheese fondues, oil fondues, and dessert fondues. There are even a few baked fondues (which the author claims are similar to souffles (without the risk of it falling) and some rarebit recipes. The recipes seem fairly straightforward and easy to follow--some do use canned soups and/or bread crumbs.It brought back fond memories of going to a fondue restaurant with my jr. high or high school teammates.

The introduction has two pages of very rudimentary advice and information concerning different types of fondues, equipment and entertaining. The rest of the book is the " star of the show"- the recipes. Most are easy to make and the ingredients are fairly easy to find. These fondue recipes span cheese, meat (like mongolian hotpot), seafood but also include seafood, hot dips, baked , desserts, oriental , poultry, tempura and more. There is also the very different "rarebits"( a cheese fondue ) recipes. Each recipe also tells the ingredients, that can be dipped into the the fondues. I did try the creamy spinach (fondue) dip and it was very good (my rating 9.4/10). Some interesting ones that I have not tried as yet but will soon are: baked rice fondue, baked turkey fondue, pizza fondue and baked tuna fondue. If you have all the equipment and more information etc then this is a non pricey book and easy way to find some more recipes. If you need to find equipment, find out more about entertaining, then you might either need another book or use this book in conjunction with an appetizer or another book to round out your fondue adventures.

We have had this book for 35 years. We borrowed it from my mom's library, and it has had a place in our cookbook shelf since. We learned how to get the most out of the wine and cheese combination that is typically known as "fondue". The extra recipes are great, but the hidden jewel is the recipe in the introduction that tells you how and why to dredge the cheese in flour, cube the cheese, and all the other little tricks to making perfect fondue. Our book is separated from the binding, has dripped wine and cheese on the pages and gets carefully filed on our cookbook shelf after each time we use it. This is probably the best fondue cookbook on the market.The Fondue Cookbook
