About the Author
Born and raised in Rangoon (Yangon), Burma (Myanmar), Kenneth Wong studied English at Rangoon University in the 1980s and bore witness to one of the seminal events of his generation—the 1988 student-led uprising against the country's military regime. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1989. Wong is the author of A Prayer for Burma, a travelogue and memoir about growing up under military rule. His short stories, articles, and essays have appeared in Myanmar Times, Irrawaddy, San Francisco Chronicle, AGNI, and Grain magazines, among others. He discusses, translates, and shares the rich literary tradition of his homeland in his personal blog. He has contributed Burmese poetry translations to Eleven Eleven and Wolf magazines.

This book is helpful for me because I know how to speak Burmese but am learning how to read. It provides a lot of short sentences to practice reading. It is a small pocket sized book that easily fits in my jean pockets. I would recommend it for a new Burmese language learner as a pocket book to practice while on the move. It has quite a bit of content for 190 pages. It would be six stars if the book included a page or two on the Burmese alphabet and if the manga included the Burmese script.Note to Publisher, I find it strange that all the Survival Southeast Asian Languages book series (Survival Burmese, Survival Tagalog, Survival Vietnamese, and Survival Thai) all feature European males and Asian females on the cover. I hope this does not perpetuate a stereotype of Southeast Asian peoples.
I just got this book today and have browsed through it enough to know that it’s going to be very useful to me the next time I visit Burma. I’ve traveled in Burma also known as Myanmar, several times - But I have never learned more than basic greetings. This small book will help me change that! Also - there are a number of drawings that make the book more interesting, more engaging. And there’s some cultural information that I appreciate. Really nice little book to take with me on my next trip.
