Under Fire does an excellent job of showing the situation from the ground. Suddenly it doesn't matter that you're representing a super power, what matters is where you are and where you can get help. Often, that help is too far away to make much difference in the situation and you have to depend on the capabilities you have available. The author did an excellent job of showing the difficulties, especially when so much of our security depended on people that couldn't be depended on.Should be on the required reading list for all members of congress.

Very well done investigative piece of work. The investigation performed by Mr. Burton and his colleague, through their unclassified sources allowed this book to read well and hold my interest. For me it confirmed much of what 13 Hours in Benghazi author, Mr. Zuckoff, wrote. Both books are worth a read, but remember, Mr. Burton wrote an investigative piece that is written well enough to hold interest.

The author spend a lot on details of how dangerous Benghazi is on normal day. Then leads into the attack, and the job of DS, and DSCC required the kind of bravery and skill was given W/O mumbling, sticking their train and performing as good as any could expect. It heart wrenching to feel dedication those had men for the Diplomat as they heroically went in to the building over and over again. In end it is obvious they a lot of military specialist, and some heavy ordinance and escape plan if needed. All in all I knew a lot more about the Benghazi tragedy after reading the book.

A stimulating read but not a lot that has not been in mainstream media and, for me, too much repetitive jargon. Certainly enough information to keep one upset about the inexcusable mistakes that allowed it to occur.

This gives the British writer of Relatively Speaking and The Norman Conquests an edge over all of the other playwriting books, not only because he is so prolific, but because he approaches this book as a writer who spends more than half of his time directing and has vast production experience with his plays and others. Ayckbourn wrote his first play at the age of ten and has lived around theatre since he was seventeen, giving him a lifetime of hands-on knowledge that is valuable and makes for a fun and informative reading experience.With his vast knowledge of theatre, Ayckbourn's approach in The Crafty Art of Playwriting isn't just for the writer; he explains everything by dividing half of the book into writing advice, the other half into everything else involving a play, from directing, casting and design to the rehearsal process and how to deal with producers. The result is that this book isn't just about playwriting but about the entire process from creating a play to previews and press night during a production. Throughout the book, which is written with a slightly humorous style, Ayckbourn gives advice though what he calls his "obvious rules" such as: "Obvious Rule No. 2: Never start a play without an idea," "Obvious Rule # 16: Never include a character with no real function," and, "Obvious Rule # 46: Never cast a celebrity." Ayckbourn also stresses in "Obvious Rule # 22: You can never know too much about your characters before you start," which he follows by mentioning that he takes about a year of thinking and planning before he writes a word of dialogue (this is a bit long for me, but every writer is different).The organization and style is very clear, practical and to the point, and after a brief discussion on comedy versus drama, he gets to the point: "Obvious Rule # 3: If you don't have the initial inspiration, put down the pen, put the pencil back into the jar, switch off the computer and go dig the garden instead." Guiding a writer that does have an idea, Ayckbourn covers the essentials but does so with very handy tips and practical advice rather than spending time creating charts and lists of the elements of a play; there are in-depth discussions about plot or rising action, simply advice on what you should consider for character and why you need to do this. He appeals to common sense rather than requirements, knowing that if all that he discusses are applied, the requirements will fall into place.While this is not a great "How-to" book for beginners, those that have read the standard guides will find this a VERY handy companion book in a playwriting class or for their collection.

There are dozens of books out there on playwriting and about half that number on directing. Unfortunately for us, neither Shakespeare, Chekhov nor Ibsen wrote books on how to write a play. As a result, virtually all the authors of books about playwriting are academics who have never written a commercially produced play. One has to question the value of such people's advice when dealing with the practical realities of the professional theatre. Sir Alan Ayckbourn has changed all that. He is the author/director of (at this writing) a whopping 69 plays, a substantial portion of which have been critical and/or commercial successes on London's West End and New York's Broadway as well as being translated into numerous languages and produced throughout the world. The first part of the book is about the craft of playwriting. Ayckbourn gives his advice in a straightforward series of "obvious rules." First he states the "obvious rule" and then illustrates it with an example, usually drawn from his own work. Some of my favorites were, "Obvious Rule No. 2: Never start a play without an idea." "Obvious Rule of No. 16: Never include a character with no real function." "Obvious Rule Number 14: At least 50 percent of your play is going to be visual." "Obvious Rule No. 22: You can never know too much about your characters before you start." Ayckbourn says that he takes about a year of thinking and planning before he actually writes a word of dialogue. I found this section of the book extremely valuable. Any playwright or would-be playwright would profit from reading it.To my surprise, I found the second part of the book, which deals with direction, even more valuable than the first part. Aside from Harold Clurman's ON DIRECTING, I cannot think of another book about directing that has been written by a successful director. Clurman's book is very good about reading a script and analyzing it and giving an overall view of how rehearsals are conducted. Most books on directing provide this information. But what sets Ayckbourn's book apart is that he talks mostly about dealing with actors. To the best of my knowledge, no one has written about this aspect. He tells how to handle fragile egos, how to deal with rivalries, how to state your criticism and the appropriate times to deal with certain issues. He also gives good advice on conducting auditions and what personality traits to look for when casting. Advice like this has long been needed.The book provides valuable information, but what makes it truly brilliant is the charming way it is written. I found it delightful from start to finish, not to mention inspirational. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to any theatre professional, not just writers and directors, but actors, designers and technicians as well. Five stars plus.

This is one of the best books on playwriting I have read. Much better than the set texts for the Oxford online course I took. Much more practical, and less of the inane and often arguable theoretical advice in others. Ayckbourn has a pleasant writing style and actually does something to encourage creativity.

Ayckebourne is a master craftsman in the art of playwriting and he gives the reader some of his best techniques in the first half of the book. Being an entertaining writer the book is also a good read for anyone who just loves attending theatre and wants to learn more about the process of theatre. The second half of the book is on directing. It was a little less interesting for me but it is still a good insight into what a director does and a fun read. Many people don't understand the role of a director in the production of drama. Highly recommend.

I teach with this book in an MFA program -- clear, funny, smart, and students love it.

I purchased this for a screenwriting course and it was pretty good. I'm no playwright but this was a text that was both valuable in terms of the amount of information but also in it's transmission of said information; it was an easy and enjoyable read.

Light weight, anecdotal chat rather than substantive material. If you are looking for some real help in writing a play, this is not it.

The book was pretty good, it had some valid points and learning that there are different ways that people express their love was important. What I think pulled away from the book was the underlying religious agenda to preach about God. It totally turned me off And I thought it was completely unnecessary to deliver the message. Of course if you are a religious person then this would be right up your alley.

I stopped reading at the part where the author recommended a woman to sleep with her husband against her will. WTF? Highly triggering for sexual abuse and domestic violence survivors.Also, the book reads like it’s written for white Christians. And for men who don’t want a partnership, but rather want to coerce their wife into being their sexually subservient housemaid/servant because they just don’t like vacuuming and can‘t afford hiring a cleaner („I thought I get myself a wife for that“).So if you’re a white Christian man or woman who likes to be a little housewife, yes, this book‘s for you.Besides that, the book offers solid scientific facts such as man‘s sex drive being dominated biologically by sperm pressure; that women‘s sex drive is purely emotional and not driven by their bodies; and more.

I have just started to read this book. In the Acknowledgments, I noticed this, "If all wives loved as she does, fewer men would be looking over the fence." How about "If all husbands loved as he does, fewer women would be looking over the fence."? I am serious.

It is definitely a good book for couples and it has improved my relationship with my wife. If nothing else it shows you what things your partner is really looking for out of their spouse. I quickly found that my love language was "Acts of Service". Though it might not be sexy or macho to say that, it means more to me to have the dishes and laundry done when I come home after work or have minor home improvements taken care of before I get home. My wife and I have 2 small children and our house is hard to stay clean because every room feels like a mess. We do clean it all the time but it feels like a losing battle. My wife's love language is "Words of Affirmation". As you can tell from all these Amazon reviews I am much more of a writer than I am a talker. My wife is always looking for me to say how much I love and appreciate her because I don't say it often enough.A big part of improving your relationship with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is to sticking with a date night to make sure you have quality time together. Especially if you have children or a high stress occupation. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and got stuck in the rut of an endless routine of doing everything we could for our kids, followed by daily chores and left little time for ourselves. Committing to 1 date night a week has really helped our relationship and improved our communication.I recommend the book for sure and found it inspiring and worth reading. All couples can benefit from reading this book. The only downside is I wish it could have been a little longer. The stories from the author are interesting and I would have liked to have heard a bunch of his other examples of couples that he has dealt with. It was a short book and my wife and I finished it in 4 or 5 days and that was reading it slowly. The price is easily affordable. I found it best to photo copy the test quiz at the end instead of writing in the book so we can give the book to any family or friends who are struggling with their relationship.

I was once asked to read this book by the only person in the world I love.....I refused. At the time I figured it to be some shrinks opinion on how we should all be in our relationships....what the hell does he know I thought.....what if he is wrong and my future wife bases our whole future on just what he says.....I imagined this book to be some guy with opinions on how to fix problems that he knows nothing about because he doesn't know "us". It's not a good feeling as a man to agree to read a book on relationships because you feel like you're putting everything into the authors hands.....and what if he "doesn't understand" or what if the advice doesn't apply to us.....what if it makes things worse between us because he advises things we don't believe in.....no....I'm not reading that I told her.I thought no matter what we would always figure each other out and we would be ok......I didn't see being asked to read this book , was a cry out from the woman I love hitting a boiling point and her attempt to communicate to me in a different way......the same things she's been trying to for a long time.....Being close minded that day costed me so much regret and misery....I used to wake up to the most beautiful smile in the world and now I don't....I recently ended up reading this book and I couldn't put it down....sounds crazy but it's true. Instead of being some guys opinions or......typical shrink talk that in no way could apply to each specific relationship.......I found it to be a book that opens up the mind to the understanding of love.....and how it is not this one universal "language" we all feel we should be the same with.....I once told her...."nobody taught me how to love, I'm growing....learning".....I pleased with her to understand I love her.......we simply didn't have an understanding of how and why we didnt approach love the exact same way as each other.....only makes sense that it should be the same right? You bicker and argue and it drives you crazy......why doesn't she understand you think.......the book is not an excuse to use or justify a true bad relationship let me add.....but it truly answers so many questions.....it is really a language of love. Once understood, this book leaves you feeling like a fool and only wanting to apply so much of what you've now learned to your future together. It takes away the work of trying to understand the things that at the time make no sense.....and allows you to focus on what's important....loving instead of wasting precious time. Read it carefully and I recommend reading it together.....I didn't get that chance but I can guarantee reading this book with who you love will allow you both to stop frequently throughout the pages and talk,learn,smile, probably cry.....but then go on to a much happier fulfilling life together once the book is closed. It can save so much if you only let it.*Update 12-1-17I drive a bus so I have nothing but time to think as I look out the window and look up at the sky looking around me. You would probably think of screaming kids and noise but for me it is driving in my own little world and using time to think about lifeI am a trainer so I spend my time trying to help people learn how to maintain their body and prevent problems. And the funny thing is that it is are very choices of what we do to our own bodies that I am teaching to have to change. All of our problems nutritionally and physically and even mentally come down too poor choice and repetitive habits that we know we need to change but never do until it's too late. Every single person reading this can relate to thatMy point about what I do is that I spend a lot of time trying to fix my body because professionals out there either won't take the time to do it or I don't have the money to spend on who is needed. I have spent countless months doing stretches and exercises and what I have found is a lot of times I'm doing the exact same stretches and exercises that don't seem to be working. Soooo......why not do different ones then right...... what a lot of reasons it may feel good, you may not know any other stretches or exercises, you may simply believe that if I just do it one more time again tomorrow....THAT it will finally help..... you just believe in that stretch so much that in your mind you just say I'll keep trying. You are maybe even making things worse by this but you're honest to God intentions are to completely cure one of the biggest problems in your life, pain...... I think you see where I'm getting at.Getting a little long for whoever is reading but there is a lot of meaning here that can help who knows thousands of people as long as this review remains online......I will just end it like this..... last night I took a stretch that I have been doing for over 2 years and I changed it in a slightly different way....... a lot of the pain I normally get daily is gone.......just to put a spotlight on that sentence .....I'm saying that what I had been doing for so long..... trying to cure one of the biggest problems in my life that hadnt been working............that I continued doing........ believing in and depending on.... to be my much needed answer.......It wasn't until I allowed the idea of the same stretch applied in a different way, that I ALLOWED life to be better for me.I did not say this stretch doesn't matter anymore and say forget it to never exist again.....no, I used it to COMMUNICATE with my body in the same exact physical form....just different language from mind to body....because I always believed in it.Belief can be amazing and help you....it also can be your own worst enemy when refuse to change your ways.....lots of time I lost believing my way instead of another.....all while would have given anything to accomplish my goal......once again I stood in my own way......but I didn't give up.....otherwise pain would still be here and I wouldn't have came on here to add all these thoughts.You have to go into the book with an open mind because if you do it with the mindset of wanting it to say what it is that you want to hear.....then you can never let the life-changing words happen.......you're learning a language as you read...not what's right and wrong but what was being lost in life.Keep in mind this is a book about the language of love so if you think about when you go to school to learn a different language...you are taking the difficult step of taking time there in order to understand.....be able to take what you understand and apply it.....and be able to communicate in a NEEDED way once you learn....AND THEN USE......communicate and UNDERSTAND eachother.Just think how you feel when you meet somebody and you want to communicate but you can't and you get frustrated. you are trying to figure out what you want the other person to know and they're trying to tell or show you..... it becomes stressful and sometimes you end up walking away from each other never knowing the real meaning that was right there between the two of you. When you are able to speak the same language this simply does not happen.....The same two people if we're able to learn the same language, could come back in front of one another again and.....just imagine......imagine the possibilities with that communication.......so much never lost again.The exact same message and the exact same feelings that were always there, except now instead of the stress of not understanding, there is the excitement for anything to be possible just by coming together and understanding.....The power of language is amazing........think of when you meet somebody and they're able to speak five or six different languages, you are in awe and wish you could do it.well imagine being able to speak the one language in life that is the most unexplainable, powerful language and meaning of life, love....I would also like to mention the fact that if these two people sat down and learn each other's languages together how helpful that is.....and how much easier it is to be able to learn how to communicate with the exact person that you're trying to ........spending time helping each other learn different languages.......TOGETHER.Bus is parked.

This is an amazing book. I bought it at the same time as the Melissa & Doug Vehicle Magnets set and they work great together for matching play. My 20 month old Grandson is obsessed with all things with wheels. This is a great way to broaden his vehicle vocabulary as he moves away from the phase where they are all 'cars'. He was able to match the photo on the magnets to the same vehicle in the book. These books are very well made with big, colorful photos and my Grandson really liked the tab design. This is one of my 18-month-old's favorite books right now. He loves that they use actual pictures and there are lots of things that go depicted. If I had to change one thing, I would say that the first page of toys is a waste. He passes by that page to get to the real things.I have purchased lots of things-that-go books for my son, and this seems to be is favorite.

My 2 year old loves this book, but I didn't love the fact that there was so much focus on the different types of trucks that there wasn't enough space to highlight vehicles like buses which my son is really into. He knows every type of construction vehicle and calls them out on the street when we walk past them so he has really learned a lot from this book.

I got this book for my 2 year old for Christmas. This is the 3rd tabbed board book I’ve purchase and I really like them. The pictures are great, there is a lot of variety and they are fun to look at. My son loves the Trucks and Diggers book so I’m hoping he’ll love this one equally as much. Highly recommend these books.

I love these DK Publishing children's books. The pages are thick cardboard and the photos are bright and clear. The two year old I gave this to was quick to open it up and start finding his favorite things. I like the way the picture tabs around the outside work like links or a table of contents to get to a particular type of vehicle.

I am so glad that I added this NRSV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible to my collection! I prefer this translation to the NIV. Its most attractive layout and colorful pictures and maps make it a total pleasure to read. It is so important to understand the context in which different parts of the Bible were written, to understand the similarities and differences among people's beliefs and customs, to have examples of different kinds of literature. This Bible offers such things. For example, The Song of Solomon includes an article about Egyptian love poetry and Mesopotamian love poetry so the reader can make comparisons.The comfort print in this Bible is pretty kind to older eyes; I would describe the size as between regular/standard print and large print; the notes, of course, are smaller, but the dark print helps to make both the text and notes quite readable. Some might want larger print, but that would make an already very thick book truly massive. Happily, the paper is not as thin as that of some other Bibles I have, and ghosting is minimal. For those who are wondering, it is not a red letter version.As well as the informative articles, introductions, chronologies, maps, and helpful indexes, I especially like the "Hebrew to English Translation Chart" and the "Key New Testament Terms" at the end of the interesting "Time Between the Testaments." I know I will spend many, many hours enjoying this Bible and learning from it.

I like the background information given with each book and sources outside of scriptures that refer to events found in the Bible. It is easy to move from reference notes back to verses. So much more information in Study Bible than any other I am familiar with. I have the Kindle edition.

A wonderful Christmas story. I love insta love stories and Mason and Winter did not disappoint. This is a joyous time of year but also stressful and hurried. There never seems to be enough time to do everything. It’s great to be able to steal away a few hours to loose yourself in a story of two people who realize how truly lucky they are to have found each other. It doesn’t hurt that they are passionate about expressing their love

I absolutely loved reading my arc copy of Mason's Winter by C.M. Steele. I can not get enough of this series and this book just made it even better. The story was sweet and amazingly written. The characters were wonderful with a phenomenal connection. This is a absolute definite must read.

I love the insta love quality in this short and sweet and super sexy read. CM Steele hit the spot with this story. I loved Mason and Winter! Can’t wait for more!I received this book as ARC.
