Charleston is a unique place for many reasons, not the least of which is its remarkable state of architectural preservation. Anyone who loves historic architecture, or is a practicing professional in this field, holds a special place in their heart for Charleston. That said, there are remarkably few good books dedicated to Charleston's built environment. This book is one of those few.First, let me say that the book is as much about interiors as it is about exteriors, which is fine considering that architecture is also this way. Also, let me be first to say that this book is not an architectural survey of Charleston, but is a representative sample of Charleston's residential architecture. The book is broken down into sections such as "Interiors," "Exteriors," and "Plantations." Within each of these sections are the chapters dedicated to each house, with full-page color photography and historical contexts. The text included with each entry is quite good, and is rigorous enough to be of interest to practicing professionals.I should mention that the photography is, for the most part, also quite good, but there are a few images that are below standard for a book of this type and price. Only a few, but they are noticeable.The building selection is limited to houses only. Many landmark examples are included, but there are also interesting studies of less well-known houses.
