After purchasing the book, I contacted Wrox Press about the missing download.. They added it to the website today.
It's been a while since I used Visual Studio so I figured I'd buy this book for a good overview. I'm really only at chapter 3, so this isn't a full review but it is helpful to put you back in that frame of mind to work with VS 2017 and it's new features.However, the code from wrox is not available and their support is not helpful at all. They'll just tell you there is none (even though yes, of course the book tells you to go there to get it) and "sorry for the inconvenience).Doesn't stop you from working along if you want to as long as your familiar with where things are when you need to work along, but it sucks that it doesn't have a way to check for reference.
Quite extensive material, including access to chapters from previous editions that haven't changed since the last release of Visual Studio. However, I have found many small errors in the screenshots and text, probably due to differences in Visual Studio versions. I suspect the graphics in the book are from the 2015 version of VS, and they have changed slightly in 2017. There are also a few organization issues. For example, how you create default properties for your own custom controls is discussed in Chapter 2, before any basic coding topics are covered - that's an odd place for an advanced topic and seems out of place. Also, docking windows covers 6 pages, but the Clipboard Ring gets two sentences and no illustration. Granted, there is a wealth of information to be covered, I just think it could be better organized and streamlined.
Overall it is well written, and it is useful when you want to know how to do a certain thing. But the book doesn't tell you why it does something. For example, Solution vs. projects. Although the book stated that it is a good tool to organize file in projects, but it doesn't tell you why it does that way. Why one solution has multiple projects, which means multiple Main()s! When you run it which one will run, and why and how it is determined.
Easy to follow, well written
I bought this book for an independent study at my university and I would highly suggest picking up this book even if you're not taking a courses and are just interested in learning how to use Visual Studio. It goes decently in-depth into Visual Studio usage and capabilities and with such a decent price, it'd be more than worth it to pick this book up.
Excellent book, but needed language-specific books to complete study
Covers a lot of ground, not a summer beach book...
